Advent is here!
The church liturgical year is coming to a close. With the beginning of Advent this weekend, we start a whole new church year. It is a time to prepare our hearts for the coming of Jesus.
Our traditions include the Advent candles, lighting one candle each week of the season leading up to Christmas Day. First is the Prophecy candle, which reminds us of the hope we have for the coming of our Savior. Spend time in the Word with scriptures such as Matt. 1:21-22, Isa. 7:14, and Isa. 9:6-7. Sing hymns with your family such as "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" or "Come Thou Long Expected Jesus."
Second is the Bethlehem or faith candle, when we remember the journey Joseph and Mary took from Nazareth to Bethlehem. What has your journey toward Christmas been like so far? As busy a time as this is to prepare for the holiday, spend time at the feet of Jesus, being more like Mary than Martha, with these scriptures: Luke 2:1-7, and Luke 10:38-42. Songs to sing this week are "O Little Town of Bethlehem" and "O Come All Ye Faithful."
Third is the Shepherds or joy candle, symbolizing the great joy which is coming. The angel said, "I bring you good news of great joy." Scriptures to read include Luke 2:6-20 and Matt. 2:7-12. Sing the hymns, "Away in a Manger" and "Joy to the World."
Fourth is the Angel or love candle, reminding us of God's love for us by sending His only son into the world. Prepare your hearts to receive His love and peace by reading from John 3:16-17, Luke 1:26-33, and sing hymns such as "The First Noel" and "Angels We Have Heard On High."
