Community Service
Thanksgiving Food Drive decorated_turkey.jpg
DCD's Community Outreach Committee is organizing a food drive to provide needy local families with all the fixings for a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner. More than twenty families will benefit from our donations, which are coordinated through the Dedham Youth Commission and the Dedham Food Pantry. This year will be DCD's 22nd Thanksgiving Food Drive.  Each child in each grade at DCD is asked to contribute specific items to the drive and should have already received an assignment. Bins for collecting donations are located outside each classroom. The deadline for donations is November 15, with the exception of pies, which should be dropped off at school on Monday, November 19, in the morning.  If you have any questions, please contact your Community Outreach parent class representative, or one of our faculty service-learning coordinators, Mr. Balk ( dbalk@dcds.net ) or Ms. Hultgren ( chultgren@dcds.net ).  Thank you for your generosity in helping others to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday!

A Thanksgiving Favorite
While there are a plethora of new books on the market every season, it's always a pleasure to introduce some of my favorite older titles to children. One series of picture books that I'm fond of is the Cranberry Series by Wende and Harry Devlin. Wende wrote the stories that she may have first shared with her own seven children. While Wende was a gifted painter, she began to collaborate with her husband, Harry, also a commercial artist. Harry began to illustrate the sweet tales that Wende wrote. Together, they created the Old Black Witch Series and the Cranberry Series.
