The future of in-person worship
Our ability to keep having in-person services --and to eventually return to the Sanctuary --depends on the COVID numbers. Since the bishop announced that churches can meet in person, COVID numbers have been going up, getting close to the 25 per 100,000 threshold that will prevent in-person services from continuing. Since our first priority is the health and safety of each parishioner, we will closely monitor the numbers each week to determine which services will be available. Thanks for your understanding during this uncertain time.

St. James’s Confirmation Classes are a model for other churches.
St. James’s teens recently completed their 2020-2021 Confirmation classes (totally online), but they aren’t the only ones who learned and grew from the experience. Others in the Episcopal Church are taking notice of our powerful 5-part confirmation classes, including Building Faith, a ministry of the Virginia Theological Society.
The attached article, which encourages other churches to follow our model, shows all the inventive and inclusive ways that our very own Mary Beth Abplanalp and the confirmation team re-imagined confirmation. It’s a fascinating read and proof that St. James’s is doing great things. Here’s the link to the story.

The History of St. James’s from
the Very Beginning
Starts this Wednesday, April 14
No matter how much you know about St. James’s, you’re about to learn a whole lot more. Every Wednesday evening from April 14 through May 5, we’ll see the very early history (1830-1865) of St. James’s through the lens of race in our series: Uncovering Our History, which begins this Wednesday.
Under the leadership of the Racial Justice & Reconciliation Ministry, a team of St. James’s parishioners have undertaken an ambitious research project, digging into old records, vestry minutes, sermons and the like, uncovering more of our history, to help us as a church family take stock of our past and move toward becoming a beloved community. In addition, well-known historians of antebellum Richmond and the Episcopal Church, Dr. Gregg Kimball and Dr. Ed Bond, respectively, will provide us with the larger historical landscape and context. We will then take two Wednesdays to discuss Henry Louis Gates, Jr.’s recent PBS special, The Black Church.
April 14: An Overview of Richmond 1830-1865, by Dr. Gregg Kimball Dr. Kimball is the Director of Public Services and Outreach at the Library of Virginia and the author of American City, Southern Place: A Cultural History of Antebellum Richmond.
Fellowship is 6-6:30 pm. Discussion is 6:30 - 7:30 pm
Register in advance just once for this entire series. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining all the meetings. Registration

Youth Summer 2021 Missions are back.
And lives will be changed.
As a church of Doers, it’s been a challenge to scale back our mission efforts over the past year. But we’re delighted to announce that our Youth Summer Missions are back. And here are the dates:
The Mini Mission gleaning the fields with Harvest of Hope is July 16-18.
The Appalachian Youth Mission with Hurley Community Development is July 18 -24.
|
|
Both missions will adhere to the most current CDC Guidelines while promising the highly rewarding and personally rich experience you’ve come to expect from St. James’s Summer Youth Missions. Both mission opportunities give our youth--and their families--a chance to put their faith into action and see how our work together can change the lives of others in a meaningful way.

Presiding Bishop Michael Curry:
Easter 2021 Message
“Our work goes on. Our labor for love continues. We will not cease, and we will not give up until this world reflects less our nightmare and more God's dream where there's plenty of good room for all God's children. Hallelujah anyhow.”
Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop and Primate Michael B. Curry - his Easter 2021 Message

Invite • Welcome • Connect
wants to connect with you.
Invite • Welcome • Connect is a transforming ministry that is coming to St. James’s. It will inform and enliven everything we do moving forward--from the way we welcome new parishioners into our church to the way each of us connects to each other and our meaningful personal ministries.
We’ll be launching focus groups about IWC on April 18th in our House Churches. If you’re not in a House Church but wish to help St. James’s become more intentional in our practices of evangelism, hospitality, and connectedness rooted in the gospel directive to “make disciples of all nations," contact Blake Singer.
