Opportunities for Service and Sharing

Focus on the Season:

Transfiguration of Our Lord

February 11: The Sundays after Epiphany began with Jesus’ baptism and end with three disciples’ vision of his transfiguration. In Mark’s story of Jesus’ baptism, apparently only Jesus sees the Spirit descending and hears the words from heaven. But now Jesus’ three closest friends hear the same words naming him God’s Beloved. As believers, Paul writes, we are enabled to see the God-light in Jesus’ face, because the same God who created light in the first place has shone in our hearts to give us that vision. The light of God’s glory in Jesus has enlightened us through baptism and shines in us also for others to see.

In Our Prayers

The Prayer List is now available in the Weekly eNews. Please click on the link under "Prayer List" which is located in the sidebar. If you have prayer requests, please send them to us at CLC, for inclusion on our prayer list.

Responses to Survey for Next Bishop

Dear Indiana-Kentucky Mission Centers,

Pursuant to S9.04.01.a., I have compiled the responses received to the survey sent out in September seeking input as we prepare for the election at our June Synod Assembly regarding both "gifts deemed important for the holder of the Office of Bishop" and "matters of priority to be dealt with by the bishop" during the upcoming six-year term of office beginning in the fall of 2024. Please click the link below to view the survey.

Synod Staff Transition

Assistant to the Bishop for Emerging Ministers & Ministries, Cory Driver, will be taking a new call to serve as the Director of L.I.F.E. (Leading the Integration of Faith and Entrepreneurship) at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Cory will continue at the Indiana-Kentucky Synod through February 18, 2024. He is profoundly grateful for the opportunity to work with so many ministers of the Gospel - lay folks, deacons, and pastors - in the Indiana-Kentucky Synod.

Assistant to the Bishop for Ministry Transition, Dan Forehand, will be taking over candidacy responsibilities with the support of Julie Walda.

Bishop Bill & Janet Gafkjen Give Thanks

Bishop Bill and Janet Gafkjen give thanks to God for the birth of a beautiful daughter to their son Nathan and his wife, Jessica. Emerlee Louise Gafkjen was born on the morning of February 1, 2024. We also welcome prayers for Nathan. He was hospitalized with a collapsed lung a few days before Emerlee’s birth. He underwent surgery the day after Emerlee’s birth. Nathan returned home to be with Jess and Emerlee, and has some weeks of recovery at home ahead of him. Thank you for your prayers of celebration and healing.

Most of all, please be safe! If you are in doubt about the weather, please stay home.

Offering Envelopes for 2024

As you have read in the previous month's "Council Notes", the Council made the decision to not order the individual boxed sets of offering envelopes that have been used in the past as a large number of our members and friends give by electronic means. Should you need envelopes for your pledge, generic envelopes are located on the credenza in the Narthex. Please write your name and envelope number on the front. If you need your envelope number, please see Bob Howell or Peter Kane. Thank you!

Christ's Cupboard

Imagine this---I have no special shopping tips this week as Valentine's Day is playing the starring role in the grocery stores. However, this is a great time to check out the dollar stores where most items are $1.25. Dollar General stores do have a $1 aisle where you can find hygiene items, soaps, and even toilet tissue. My guess is that all of us have a spare dollar or two to help fill Christ's Cupboard shelves.

Advantages of Online Giving

Have you considered the online giving option? Here are some of the advantages:

Advantages of Vanco Electronic Giving:

  1. No paper envelopes and checks to be processed.
  2. Giving is much more private.
  3. Minimizes Sunday morning counting and bank trips.
  4. Florida snowbirds don’t have to send physical checks in the mail.
  5. Credit/Debit cards are a second option to direct bank-to-bank transactions if desired.
  6. Specialized giving such as ‘Furnace Fund’ can be easily set up to avoid the hassle of separate checks or cash for miscellaneous giving.
  7. You have complete control of starting/stopping/changing as you wish.
  8. A history of your giving is directly available through the Vanco app without having to check with the Financial Secretary.
  9. Money is transferred to our church checking account in a matter of 1-2 days rather than a week or two after the fact.

If you are ready to make the change from paper, please speak with Jerre Fercho or Bob Howell. They will be happy to talk with you about the advantages and get you set up!

We thank everyone for what has been given to date and appreciate all efforts made to stay current.

Thank you!
