Opportunities for Service and Sharing

Focus on the Season:

Fourth Sunday in Lent

March 19: In today’s gospel the Samaritan woman asks Jesus for water, an image of our thirst for God. Jesus offers living water, a sign of God’s grace flowing from the waters of baptism. The early church used this gospel and those of the next two Sundays to deepen baptismal reflection during the final days of preparation before baptism at Easter. As we journey to the resurrection feast, Christ comes among us in word, bath, and meal—offering us the life-giving water of God’s mercy and forgiveness.

In Our Prayers

The Prayer List is now available in the Weekly eNews. Please click on the link under "Prayer List" which is located in the sidebar. If you have prayer requests, please send them to us at CLC, for inclusion on our prayer list.

New Phone System

Our new phone system, installed by Wyatt Communications, Inc., of Lafayette, IN, is installed and operational! You may now resume calling the church phone number and leave a message if the staff member you are trying to reach is unavailable. You will first hear an initial greeting when you dial the church number. Press 1 for Tom Dearchs or press 2 for Pastor Walker. If they are available, they will pick up the call. If not, you will be able to leave a voicemail.

There are public phones that may be used by members and friends of CLC located in the Office Work Room as well as the kitchen. Simply lift the handset and dial the number you are intending to call. The new phones are very easy to use. It is not necessary to choose a phone line before dialing the number. If you have any questions about the phones, please see Tom Dearchs.

In addition to our new phone system, we have signed the necessary paperwork to switch from AT&T to Comcast as our internet/phone provider. As Comcast needs to complete construction for this to take place, it will be approximately 3-6 months before this change occurs.

Video Doorbells - update

As of last evening, we now have video and audio doorbells located at all entrances to the building. Should you come to the church and need access to the building, (and don't have a key) press the button on the doorbell and a staff member will let you in (if they are available). Thank you to Josh Taylor for installing these for us! Thank you to the Memorial Committee for approving this purchase utilizing memorial funds.

Security System

As with any project, items arise that need to be addressed. With the installation of our new phone system, Koorsen Security Systems (our alarm monitoring company) had to install an Internet Communicator Device so that our security system would function without the need for a phone line. In doing this upgrade to our system, a function was enabled that causes a "chime" to occur when any of our exit doors are opened. This is quite a great feature as I can hear (from my office) when and which doors are being opened.

Lenten Recital Series

Lenten Recital Series

Wednesday, March 22 @ 12:10 PM

Shayla Van Hal, organ

An Iowa native, Shayla Van Hal is a third-year doctoral candidate in organ performance at Indiana University, studying with Dr. Chris Young. She received her master's degrees in church music (organ) and music theory from the University of Kansas, studying with Drs. James Higdon, Michael Bauer, and Scott Murphy. Her BA in music is from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, working with organist Dr. Gregory Peterson.

Her interest in education brought her back to Luther College for the fall of 2019, where she served as Visiting Professor of Music and Interim College Organist while Dr. Peterson was on sabbatical. After a particularly French-focused education at KU, Ms. Van Hal has dedicated her academic and performance interests in her doctorate to under-performed organ music, particularly the music of Eastern Europe. Her future dissertation plans involve studying Polish organ music of the Communist era with hopes of spending a semester in Poland. She currently serves as an Associate Instructor for the Music Theory department at IU, as well as the Assistant Director of Music and Organist at First Christian Church, Bloomington. Shayla enjoys apartment life with her husband, Adam, and their cat, Snowboots.

Shayla will perform the music of Franck, Liszt, and Laurin. We hope you will join us!

ELCA World Hunger's 40 Days of Giving

The 40 days of Lent are a season to reflect and remember, to look forward and ahead. These are not easy times for many of us. Yet Lent reminds us that God is not yet through with us or our world. We know by faith that God is at work, drawing us toward the resurrection and restoration of the world. Connect to the church’s global work to end hunger and poverty during ELCA World Hunger’s 40 Days of Giving, which begins on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 22. Visit ELCA.org/40Days for resources including a devotional calendar, a study guide, an action guide and a Lenten email series.
