HAPPENING THIS WEEKEND AT UUCUC
BERNADINE STAKE'S CELEBRATION OF LIFE ON APRIL 20

but better if you come.

Bernadine’s celebration of life will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church on Saturday, April 20, at 1:00 p.m. Rev. Florence Caplow will officiate. A reception will follow at the Channing Murray Foundation, at 1209 W. Oregon in Urbana, at 3:00 p.m.

GTKPACB MEETING WEDNESDAY APRIL 24
Thanks to all who have attended so far and provided feedback!
From Brian McDermott

On May 5, our Congregation will be having our Annual Meeting. As our Congregation has grown closer to being a mid-sized (program-sized) church, our fundamental rules of governance and job responsibilities must also grow and mature. To that end, the Board of Trustees is endorsing a Proposed series of amendments to our Constitution and Bylaws – some minor and some not.

To introduce these changes to the Congregation (before the annual Meeting), the Board invites you come to one (or more) of a series of meetings we are planning in the coming weeks to introduce the amendments, let you ask questions, and hear your feedback (well before the annual Meeting, if you get my point.)

We had a good turn-out last 2 Sunday and good discussions and feedback: your Board encourages as many interested Members to attend as possible

Right now the list of times are incomplete, but here are some of the scheduled times:

  • Weekday Opportunity: Wednesday April 24th Children’s Chapel – 7-8 pm

We’ve created a location so that you can see the presentation planned at the meeting, please CLICK HERE.

Questions, contact Brian McDermott at Brian.McDermott@ii-vi.com.
RESOLVING CONFLICT, FINDING AGREEMENT - PART 1, APRIL 27 & PART 2, MAY 18

At a time when differences seem more pronounced, simple disagreements can turn into difficult conflicts. Join Gail Schiesser and Virginia Brubaker on Saturday, April 27 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to learn how to deal both more effectively and more comfortably with conflict. In this fun and hands-on experience, you will learn how to:

  • Identify and develop outcomes that are worth reaching;
  • Recognize your own style for conflict and begin to be more comfortable with other styles;
  • Discover the greater, more important goals that drives people to want something;
  • Discover what conditions will have to be met to secure an agreement in a particular conflict; and
  • Set a framework for an agreement between two parties.

This class will help anyone who finds themselves in situations where those around you are in conflict with each other from time to time. If you would like to be more helpful in those situations, this class is for you.

Virginia and Gail have taught communications skills for many years through the NLP Institute of Chicago. As partners in Common Sense Mediation, they resolved complex conflicts through mediation for couples and groups. Please feel free to call them if you have questions about this class. Virginia's number is 217-419-3106.

To register, CLICK HERE.

Light lunch and child care provided on request. The registration form has a place for child care request and lunch preferences.

Part 2 is scheduled for Saturday, May 18 from 9 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. for anyone who has completed Part 1. Mark you calendar. Registration will open shortly.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
ANNOUNCING THE UU WOMEN'S LUNCH GROUP!

We will meet weekly on Thursday at 11:30, at a different restaurant every month. We've recently decided to brown bag our lunch on the fourth Thursday, gathering in Fellowship Hall. Sometimes, in pleasant weather, we might lunch in a park on the fourth Thursday, which is also the time we’ll choose a restaurant to visit the following month.

Of course not all of us attend every week. It's a slightly different group each week, as life and other commitments intervene. Sylvia McDermott emails a reminder at the beginning of each week. If you plan to attend, please "Reply All" so that we all have a good idea of how many to expect.

Our group is open to any woman-identified person associated with our church. Please contact Sylvia McDermott if you’re interested at salmcd.84@gmail.com, or 217-398-1948.
UU PLAY GROUP STARTING MAY 1!

Families with young children, join the UU playgroup. The group will meet weekly on Wednesdays from 9-11 am, beginning May 1st, in the church nursery for children ages 0-5 (older siblings welcome too). This playgroup is designed for at least one parent or guardian to be with their children. This gives families an opportunity to connect on a variety of levels. For questions, contact Michaela Kruse at krusemichaela@yahoo.com.
IMAGINE A COOL SANCTUARY...

Are you tired of our hot, humid un-air-conditioned Sanctuary? Help is on the way!

The Board just voted to create a "Mini Capital Campaign" for this May, focused on energy efficient cooling of the Sanctuary and other accessibility improvements, to be voted on at the May congregational meeting.

This exciting project needs YOU in order to succeed. Would you like to help with the organizing, and/or are you so jazzed by this thought that you would like to make a pre-campaign pledge to get us started? Please contact Jenny Hunt at chair@uucuc.org
DO YOU NEED A RIDE TO CHURCH? Are you willing to drive your fellow UUs to church occasionally? If you need a ride or are able to help out with this valuable service, please contact our dedicated ride coordinator, Anne Reeser at: 217-369-1764.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS
CAMP KIWANIS SERVICE PROJECT

This year, the Coming of Age group has used Girl Scout Camp Kiwanis for its fall and spring retreats. It has been a beautiful space with lots of room to play, learn and explore. As a thank you for Camp Kiwanis’ generous hospitality, we are scheduled to do a service project at the camp on Sunday, April 28 following worship and religious education, from noon to 4 p.m..

This is an all ages activity! We will meet at the church and carpool together.  Before we begin, we will enjoy a picnic lunch together and then one of their property leaders will work with us to give back to the camp.

This is a service project. It will also be a fun time for us to be together. If you are interested in being a part, email Michele Grove at re-director@uucuc.org. She wants to be sure we have enough for the carpool and for lunch!
CHILD CARE POLICY

If you have an event which would benefit from child care, reach out to our child care coordinator, Kelsey Libert. She is happy to work with you to organize child care. Below is the current child care request policy:

Email childcare@uucuc.org at least 48 hours in advance of your requested date and time of event. Please provide us with the number of children expected and their approximate ages so that we can be best prepared. We do our best to provide child care when needed but know there are times when members of our child care team may not be available. In the unlikely situation that one or two child care providers are not available, it is up to the sponsoring organization to find willing volunteers. All childcare workers (paid and volunteer) must have completed a UUCUC background check. The sooner a request is made, the more likely we are able to schedule child care providers. We will communicate the arrangements

BOARD NEWS
BOARD MEETING ON FRIDAY APRIL 19

There will be an additional Board business meeting Friday, April 19 at 5:30 in Classroom 1 to take a final vote on by-laws and the 2019/2020 budget. The meeting is open for all members to attend!
ANNUAL REPORT MOVES TO SEPTEMBER
From the Board of Trustees

Our Annual Meeting is held the first Sunday of May each year, and with it, an annual report has been produced. In order to have the annual report ready, every church leader had to complete a report for 3/4 of the year. That includes the treasurer, who had to report on the current 3/4 of the fiscal year, but also the missing quarter from the previous year, and the proposed budget for the next year. It’s a bit confusing for everyone.

Rosalyn suggested, as her parting gift to UUCUC, that we create an annual report AFTER the end of the fiscal year. Her brilliant idea is becoming reality. The Annual Report will now be produced by the second Sunday in September, giving our leadership enough time after the end of the fiscal year to complete a report, and Brian (our Office Administrator) time to produce and distribute it to the congregation.

We will still bring all of the important business of the church to our Annual Meeting in May -- it’s May 5 this year -- and we’ll also hear highlights from the committees. Your Annual Meeting packet will be coming to you by April 25.
SOCIAL JUSTICE NEWS
TWELFTH ANNUAL ECIRMAC 2019 FUNDRAISER BANQUET - SATURDAY, APRIL 27

Established in 1980, the East Central Illinois Refugee Mutual Assistance Center has provided services to refugees, immigrants, and their families who settle in East Central Illinois. ECIRMAC was our tenant for most of these years, and just moved to a new and larger space. But they remain close to our hearts!

To benefit the work of the Refugee Center, the Twelfth Annual Fundraising Banquet will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2019, at 6:00 p.m. at the Round Barn Banquet Centre located at 1900 Round Barn Road, Champaign, IL. For more information, CLICK HERE
UUCUC Shared Offering. Each month a selected organization is chosen to receive half of our weekly Sunday plate collections, designated checks written to UUCUC with organization's name written in the memo line, cash envelopes designated for "Shared Offering" within the specified month and on-line donations through our GIVE WEBPAGE .

During the month of April Sunday services’ shared offerings will support Independent Media Center (IMC) .

The Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center is a grassroots organization committed to using media production and distribution as tools for promoting social and economic justice in the Champaign County area.

IMC fosters the creation and distribution of media, art, and narratives emphasizing underrepresented voices and perspectives and promote empowerment and expression through media and arts education.

The IMC helps people in their responsible search for truth and meaning. Art and community gatherings allow people to tell their stories in powerful ways. The IMC provides an environment where money and other mainstream pressures play less on the immediate environment of the artist or group which allows for deeper criticism and a more illuminating or empowering fashion.
