HAPPENING THIS WEEKEND AT UUCUC
RESOLVING CONFLICT, FINDING AGREEMENT - PART 1, APRIL 27 & PART 2, MAY 18

Virginia Brubaker and Gail Scheissler will offer this amazing class on Saturday, April 27th from 9-1:30 PM. This class will provide UUCUC religious education leaders with skills that help them in life and in RE leadership. If you are interested in being a part of this interactive learning, register HERE.

During this class, you will learn how to:
  • Identify and develop outcomes that are worth reaching;
  • Recognize your own style for conflict and begin to be more comfortable with other styles;
  • Discover what conditions will have to be met to secure an agreement in a particular conflict:
  • Set a framework for an agreement between two parties.

If you have more questions about what is involved in this class, feel free to call Gail and Virginia at 217-419-3106. They serve as partners in Common Sense Mediation and taught for many years through the NLP Institute of Chicago.

Part 2 is scheduled for Saturday, May 18 from 9 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. for anyone who has completed Part 1. For more details on Part 2, see below under Religious Education news.

EASTER SUNDAY/EARTH DAY "PRAYER FLAGS"

Wondering about the beautiful strips of material tied to our trees on the south side of the building? For Easter Sunday/Earth Day, we handed out strips of batik material and invited people in the service to consider some transformation in their own life or in the world that they wished to see, and then they tied their strip to the trees after the service.

They will stay up until the end of the church year in June. You can watch the Easter service here.

If you didn't have a chance to tie a "prayer flag" of your own, feel free to bring your own and add it!
STEPHANIE COBB IS STEPPING DOWN

Stephanie's last day as a member of the staff of UUCUC will be Sunday, April 28th. She has worked for the church for 19 years, first in childcare, and then providing invaluable help in the kitchen each Sunday.

She is looking forward to enjoying a sabbatical from Sundays at UUCUC, and has other work plans. Please take a moment to thank her for her service this Sunday. She has asked not to be publicly acknowledged, and at her request, rather than giving her a gift, we are making a donation in her name to the East Central Illinois Food Bank. Thank you, Stephanie, for your hard work and dedication over these many years!
LESBIAN VISIBILITY DAY

Lesbian Visibility Day, now embedded in the international LGBTQ+ calendar, is a celebration of the world's diverse Sapphic community. Held on April 26 every year, Lesbian Visibility Day showcases women-loving-women, providing a platform for lesbian role models to speak out on the issues facing female sexual minorities. -From PinkNews Daily LGBT+ Newsletter

In 1923, the U.S. got its first book of lesbian poetry: On A Grey Thread by Elsa Gidlow. Here’s a link to a poem from the book, " For the Goddess Too Well Known".

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS
KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN!

Starting the week of April 22nd, a bulletin board in fellowship hall will be loaded with little brown paper bags. Each bag will have the name of a religious education leader who worked this year as a part of our program. We invite families to write notes, draw pictures or drop little tokens of thanks into these bags. They will be presented to the leaders on May 19th.

MAKING RELIGIOUS EDUCATION HAPPEN!

This year, there has not been a religious education committee to dream, plan and implement a full religious education program. Religious education volunteers and staff have worked well making the program happen, but it is time to create a committee (or another creative structure) so that we can continue our with enthusiasm and passion. Currently, there are wise persons working to create this newfound structure.

During the month of May, three working groups will meet to discuss how to revitalize this committee (or other named group) to lead a full religious education program next year.
  • The first working group is the religious education CHILDREN’s working group and it will meet on Wednesday, May 1st from 6-8 p.m. Anyone interested in exploring models are welcome to join us.
  • The second and third working groups, youth and adult will be scheduled shortly.
  • The hope is that representatives of each working group will meet in early June to create a new model of Religious Education lay leadership who collaborates with staff. Then, we will try it on for size.

We do not know what to call this new leadership model – is it a committee? A council? Working teams? The language and structure are still in design. But we are confident that the new model will take passion, energy and dreams and make great things happen! If you want to be a part of any of these working groups, email Michele at
re-director@uucuc.org. She is looking forward to the collective wisdom and energy which is born of this process.
RESOLVING CONFLICT, FINDING AGREEMENT - PART 2
Anyone completing the first class is invited to take Part TWO on Saturday, May 18, 2019 from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM. Lunch and child care provided. Interested parties should fill out this FORM.
OUR CARING CONGREGATION
Joys and Sorrows

A joy shared by Anonymous
There are violets growing in our backyard. I've lived there for years and never taken the time to notice them. They are beautiful!

A joy shared by Anonymous
Please send good intentions, energies, and prayers as I negotiate a job promotion and transition. There have been illegal hiring practices which I will need to confront - I ask for grace, strength, clarity, and resolve in advocating for myself, so as to benefit myself, so that others can ultimately benefit, too.

A sorrow shared by Kristy Higgs
Sharing the sorrow of the recent death of my sister, Patricia Higgs London. Patty "lost her battle" with depression and anxiety and ended her own life. A light and hope that someday soon mental illness will receive the same recognition, resources and relief that physical illness enjoys.

Jim Kuypers is moving
Jim Kuypers has moved to Georgia, following his heart. He would love to hear from UUCUC folk, and if your travels take you anywhere near Atlanta, please get in touch. He will be back in town occasionally. His new address is 787 N. Superior Ave., Decatur, GA 30033

A joy shared by Amanda Owings
I'm happy to announce that I have defended and deposited my dissertation and will be graduating in May!

A joy shared by Sarah Wisseman
A grandson, Indigo Saga Wisseman, born to Nick and Ginger Wisseman, on April 3.
SOCIAL JUSTICE NEWS
UPDATED VENUE - 12TH ANNUAL ECIRMAC 2019 FUNDRAISER BANQUET ON SATURDAY, APRIL 27

Established in 1980, the East Central Illinois Refugee Mutual Assistance Center has provided services to refugees, immigrants, and their families who settle in East Central Illinois. ECIRMAC was our tenant for most of these years, and just moved to a new and larger space. But they remain close to our hearts!

To benefit the work of the Refugee Center, the Twelfth Annual Fundraising Banquet will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2019, at 6:00 p.m. at the Vineyard Church at 1500 N Lincoln Ave in Urbana, IL. For more information, CLICK HERE
UUCUC Shared Offering. Each month a selected organization is chosen to receive half of our weekly Sunday plate collections, designated checks written to UUCUC with organization's name written in the memo line, cash envelopes designated for "Shared Offering" within the specified month and on-line donations through our GIVE WEBPAGE .

During the month of April Sunday services’ shared offerings will support Independent Media Center (IMC) .

The Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center is a grassroots organization committed to using media production and distribution as tools for promoting social and economic justice in the Champaign County area.

IMC fosters the creation and distribution of media, art, and narratives emphasizing underrepresented voices and perspectives and promote empowerment and expression through media and arts education.

The IMC helps people in their responsible search for truth and meaning. Art and community gatherings allow people to tell their stories in powerful ways. The IMC provides an environment where money and other mainstream pressures play less on the immediate environment of the artist or group which allows for deeper criticism and a more illuminating or empowering fashion.
