HAPPENING THIS WEEKEND AT UUCUC
SUNDAY SERVICE
SEEKING SANCTUARY
IMMIGRATION JUSTICE TASK FORCE AND THE WORSHIP COMMITTEE

Sunday, July 21 2019 at 10:15 a.m. in Fellowship Hall

“Every human is sacred across all borders.”

Sanctuary: A place of refuge or safety. Imagine what it must take to flee the only home you have ever known in search of sanctuary. In this service, the voice of immigrants seeking sanctuary will be heard through reflections, poems, and songs to raise awareness and encourage advocacy. Sing with the Congolese Choir from St. Patrick Church!

ONE LAST CALL FOR BACKPACKS - SUNDAY JULY 21
Can you bring a backpack to church that day (neutral in color and large enough for a teen)? The Immigration Justice Task Force plans to fill them with clothes, shoes, a blanket, hygiene products, and other items that will be given to undocumented teens attending school in Urbana School District #116 this fall. Thank you!

NO CAGES RALLY AND VIGIL
  • Saturday, July 27, 2019 at 7:00 p.m., Rally; 8:00 p.m., Speak-out; and 8:30 p.m., Candlelight Vigil - all at the Champaign County Courthouse.
  • Sunday, July 28, 2019 at 9:30 a.m., witness and walk to UUCUC - Champaign County Courthouse

On Saturday, July 27, a coalition of local organizations is holding a #UCNoCages public art demonstration and vigil to protest Trump’s mass raids and border cages. This vigil and demo is intended to draw attention to the immigration crisis taking place at the US-Mexico border, but also in Champaign-Urbana.

To bring local awareness to the dire situation children face at the border, cages will be erected in front of the Champaign County Courthouse in downtown Urbana. There will be art created and displayed by youth who have recently arrived to CU after spending time in the cages. Local volunteers will be staying overnight in these cages.

The following Sunday morning, volunteers released from cages will walk to UUCUC, accompanied by the Immigration Justice Task Force. We invite you to be present for the 9:30 a.m. witness and short walk to our church. Questions? Contact Pam 773.556.3418.

CALL FOR WEBSITE PHOTOS

We are currently in the process of designing a new website for the church which we are excited to be able to share with everyone very soon. If you have something that you would like to submit, please send it to Brian Franklin at admin@uucuc.org with information about the photo including who took it and whether the material is copyrighted. Please understand that we may not be able to use all photos submitted because of space and design constraints.

OUR CARING CONGREGATION
JOYS AND SORROWS

A joy shared by Anonymous
Dr. Stake was my Psychology professor at the University of Nebraska. I am here today (July 14) to honor him.

A sorrow shared by Allan Max Axelrod
We still do not have a year-round homeless shelter, the living wage in C-U is already higher than $15/hour as measured by the National Low Income Housing Coalition, and ICE raids are occuring.

A sorrow shared by Care Core
Pat McClard’s father, Jim, died this week. Please keep Pat and his family in your thoughts during this difficult time. Cards can be sent to Pat at this address: 2103 Belmore Ct., Champaign, IL  61821.

A joy shared by Claudia Gross
A week with 3 awesome granddaughters? Priceless!

A joy shared by David Gross
My grandson, Benjamin Gross performed on the stage of the Great Hall of Krannert as part of the Junior Concert Band of the Illinois Summer Youth Music Program. The daughter of Michele Grove sat next to Benjamin. Jeremy Loui of our church was the assistant conductor of the band. This grandpa is button busting proud!

A sorrow shared by Doug Jones
I share with sadness that my sister-in-law, Linda Jones, died peacefully on Tuesday (July 9, 2019) at home. My brother Dwight (Dewey) Jones married her in 1996 and with friends was caring for her at their apartment during her final days. She was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer a couple months ago. Memorial services will be held at UUCUC, at a time and date to be determined. Donations in Linda's honor can be sent to help cover final expenses to Dewey in care of the Sunset Funeral Home, 710 N. Neil St., Champaign. Please hold Dewey in you thoughts during this time.

A joy shared by Kyle Kroha
Gratitude for family and friends helping me to prepare my parents' home for market. I could not do so without their time, help, and encouragement, and I feel fortunate and humbled to receive such gifts from them.

UUCUC Shared Offering.  Each month a selected organization is chosen to receive half of our weekly Sunday plate collections, designated checks written to UUCUC with organization's name written in the memo line, cash envelopes designated for "Shared Offering" within the specified month and on-line donations through our  GIVE WEBPAGE  .

During the month of July Sunday services’ shared offerings will support  UC Books to Prisoners  .

UC Books to Prisoners is an Urbana-based non-profit providing books to inmates throughout Illinois at no cost. They also operate the libraries at the two Champaign County jails.

We are also hosting two work sessions at UC Books to Prisoners specifically for UU volunteers, sponsored by the Racial Justice Project of UUCUC. Volunteers will read inmate letters and select books to fulfill their requests. The books will be distributed to prisoners at any of the twenty-eight prisons in Illinois. Volunteer sessions are family-friendly (age 10 and up with an adult) and can be a powerful way to better understand and empathize with incarcerated individuals.

UU volunteer sessions will be held on Sunday July 21st and Sunday July 28th from noon-1:30 p.m. at the UC Books to Prisoners office at the Independent Media Center, a short walk from church. Space is limited, so sign-up is required.   CLICK HERE to learn more and sign up.
