SUNDAY SERVICE
A FREE AND RESPONSIBLE SEARCH FOR ADVENTURE
CHRIS HANNAUER AND THE WORSHIP COMMITTEE
Sunday, August 11, 2019 at 10:15 a.m. in Fellowship Hall

Our modern world has no shortage of ways to immerse yourself in fantastical worlds and situations. Video games, movies, television, books: all of these can take you on amazing adventures. However, the stories they give you are pre-determined, and you largely experience them alone, passively, without much interaction with those around you. Role playing games offer the ability to have the same adventures, but to play an active role in how they turn out, and more importantly, to have the experience as part of a team working together towards a common goal. Join us for this service where we will explore the world of fantasy role playing games, and how the gaming experience influences real life. Presented by Dana Antonelli, Matt Burack, Chris Hannauer, Andrew Kerins, and Maggie Verlklan.

NAVIGATORS, USA - SCOUTING FOR THE 21ST CENTURY

Dear UUCUC,

My name is Tania Madrigal and I’m looking to starting a Navigators USA Scouting chapter here in Champaign-Urbana and sponsored by UUCUC. Navigators are a secular, social-justice oriented and multigenerational scouting organization that is an alternative to traditional scouting. The Navigators’ Moral Compass (i.e. pledge) is very aligned with UU values and principles. We are hoping to gauge interest and see if families would be interested. We are hoping to have an informational meeting within the next month or two.

If you are interested, please watch for further details and check out https://navigatorsusa.org/. Navigators USA also has a Facebook page.

Thanks!
Tania
UUCUC RELIGIOUS EDUCATION COUNCIL TAKES SHAPE

A vital religious education program takes a team: professional staff and lay leadership work together to dream, plan and implement the program for all ages. Over the past few months, several key leaders have worked to create a new model of shared religious education leadership. A draft of the new model: a religious education council is  HERE.

Here are some key notes:
  1. These are exciting times and the vision of shared leadership is forming in a collaboration of staff, lay leadership and learning participants.
  2. This is a work in progress. Watch for the model to evolve until it becomes what works best for UUCUC.
  3. It looks complicated. However, most of the circles in this model are already happening. The goal is to take the working elements of our current program and weave them with the visions.
  4. Now we need key leadership to help coordinate the effort with UUCUC professional staff.
  • Barbara Hudgings will be the first religious education council chairperson. She will work with Michele Grove, Interim director of religious education and other key leaders to implement the council model. Thank you Barbara, for stepping into this exciting and creative role!
  • Now, we need to recruit key leaders to work at the heart of the council with Children’s education, Youth education, Adult education and Multi-age education. These leaders lead at the heart of the council in partnership with religious education staff.
  • All council work is open to all involved in religious education. The council officially meets 3 times a year and all religious education leadership is invited to be a part of the creative process.
  • The first religious education council meeting is Saturday, August 17 from 9 AM to 1 PM.

This is exciting work! If you are interested in working with the religious education council, reach out to  Michele Grove.
OUR CARING CONGREGATION
JOYS AND SORROWS

A sorrow shared by Care Core
A candle of remembrance for our dear Char Brady who died this past week. Please keep her husband Dan and the rest of their family in your thoughts.

A sorrow shared by Care Core
Our thoughts are with Chet Strohecker as he enters hospice care this week. Cards are welcome.

Sorrows and joys shared by Kyle Kroha
1 - Prayers and fierce positive energy for best outcomes for Congo's ebola crisis; 2 - Appreciation for Gibson City Hospital ER, a competent, low-key, less stressful option that afforded me care after a barn accident caused fractures of ribs 4 and 7. Am doing well, and am grateful. (Virtual hugs only, please!). 3 - So excited about the Congolese Choir! My sister Polly is a member of their church and we are so proud of them!
SOCIAL ACTION NEWS
BACKPACK WELCOME KIT

The Immigration Justice Task Force (IJTF) thanks all for the generous donations of backpacks on Sunday, July 21 for undocumented teens in Urbana. IJTF will fill them with blankets, gift certificates, toiletries, bus tokens and more in the coming weeks.

We’ll provide an opportunity for you to write a short note of welcome to these teens in the coming weeks.
UUCUC member Jenny Lokshin volunteering at UC Books to Prisoners. Another volunteer session is being held on Sunday, July 28th from noon to 1:30 p.m.
UUCUC Shared Offering.  Each month a selected organization is chosen to receive half of our weekly Sunday plate collections, designated checks written to UUCUC with organization's name written in the memo line, cash envelopes designated for "Shared Offering" within the specified month and on-line donations through our  GIVE WEBPAGE  .

During the month of July Sunday services’ shared offerings will support  UC Books to Prisoners  .

UC Books to Prisoners is an Urbana-based non-profit providing books to inmates throughout Illinois at no cost. They also operate the libraries at the two Champaign County jails.

We are having a work session at UC Books to Prisoners specifically for UU volunteers, sponsored by the Racial Justice Project of UUCUC. Volunteers will read inmate letters and select books to fulfill their requests. The books will be distributed to prisoners at any of the twenty-eight prisons in Illinois. Volunteer sessions are family-friendly (age 10 and up with an adult) and can be a powerful way to better understand and empathize with incarcerated individuals.

The UU volunteer session will be held on Sunday, July 28th from noon-1:30 p.m. at the UC Books to Prisoners office at the Independent Media Center, a short walk from church. Space is limited, so sign-up is required.   CLICK HERE to learn more and sign up.
