THIS SUNDAY'S SERVICE
ERICH ADICKES, CHRIS HANNAUER
KATHY ROBINSON
Sunday, August 2 at 10:15 a.m. via Live-stream

For many years this church held a "Poetry of Winter" service in early January. This year we are turning that upside down and exploring poetry as a summer activity. Please join us, as members and friends of UUCUC share the "poetry of summer," poems that invoke the season for us, even if they aren't explicitly about long sunny days or walks along a beach.
SUBMITTING JOYS AND SORROWS DURING SUMMER SERVICES

Please send your joys and sorrows to [email protected] in advance of the service each week, by 5:00 p.m. on Fridays.
During the summer, the  online "Zoom" Fellowship Hour  is scheduled to begin at 11:15 a.m. on Sundays. All are welcome!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY!

UPCOMING SUNDAY SERVICES
SAM BESHERS, SHERRY BOLHEN
Sunday, August 9 at 10:15 a.m. via Live-stream

Soul Matters small groups have added a new and vital dimension to church life and our community. Soul Matters groups work with a different theme each month, and meet to share their experiences and insights from the theme. A key feature of Soul Matters is deep listening, in which the group members commit to giving every member the space to articulate and to share their thoughts. Soul Matters is better experienced than described. In this service we will share a Soul Matters group meeting, to bring the Soul Matters experience to a wilder audience.

Saturday, August 1 at 9:30 a.m.

This is not an easy time for parents. Having to balance everything (work, family, home- schooling, and the anxieties of our time) is difficult. This is a safe place to bring your concerns and discuss any issues with those who are also experiencing the challenges. This is also a good place to connect and build relationships. We look forward to being with you.   Read more
Sunday, August 16 at 3:00 p.m.

You’ll meet others interested in UUCUC membership. At the end of the class, you’ll have an opportunity to virtually “sign the book” and become a member of our church community and a vested partner.  Read more

UUCUC'S "BUDDY SYSTEM"
Staying connected while
UUCUC facilities are closed

During this time of social distancing, staying in touch and checking in with each other is going to be very important. We hope you will consider being part of our "Buddy System" so we can care for one another.

You can sign up here: https://uucuc.breezechms.com/form/2184f1. Buddies will check in with each other regularly by phone to provide connection, companionship, and connections to help if needed. This is a great way to help each other.
JOYS AND SORROWS sent to [email protected] for last Sunday, July 26 .

From Thom Bohlen: First a deep Sorrow: An arsonist firebombed the Maricopa County Arizona Democratic Party office in Phoenix. Although everything was lost, no one was injured and they still have their resolve to carry on.... This attack happened the day after a Confederate monument was removed from the state capital and the day before the Maricopa County Democratic Party convention. And a Joy: Great joy and deep gratitude to those who have the courage to take a stand and speak truth to power in the face of the current outright assault on our democracy. I’m getting my leaf blower charged up in case I need to stand in support of the Wall of Moms.

From Gail Cohen: Sending continuing prayers to Ruth Bader Ginsberg. May she face her current cancer battle as courageously as she has in the past knowing how many people are holding her in their hearts.

From Umeeta Sadarangani and Marilyn Ryan: First a Joy: Umeeta’s parents made it safely back from India to Connecticut on July 17, on a plane coming to the US to repatriate Indian citizens. (Their original return flight was scheduled for April 24.) And a Concern: Umeeta’s father is now in the hospital with pneumonia—but has tested negative for COVID. Please keep him and Umeeta’s mom in your thoughts and prayers.
Please send your joys and sorrows to [email protected] in advance of the service each week, by 5:00 p.m. on Fridays.
GIVING AND GRATITUDE
UUCUC Social Action Offering.  Each month a selected organization is chosen to receive offerings from our congregation. You may donate to the social action offering for the month in one of the following ways:

During the month of August, we will support the Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. The Illinois chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America is a non-partisan movement to advocate for stronger gun laws. 36,000+ people per year die from gun deaths through mass shootings, suicide, domestic abuse, and accidental shootings. Solutions to gun violence are straightforward: stronger background checks, holding the gun industry accountable, removing guns from domestic abusers and suicidal people, and stopping gun trafficking and the sale of military grade weapons.
