SETTLED SEARCH TEAM UPDATE
|
|
And we’re off! This past Sunday your Search Team conducted the service and emphasized throughout the role that we all must play in the search process. (If you missed the service, please check it out on the church YouTube channel.) The first major thing we are asking of you is to take a survey about what you are looking for in a minister. This survey has been available for about a week and as of this writing we are 22 percent of the way to our goal of 200 responses. We can’t stress enough how important robust participation will be to our ability to find a good ministerial “fit”, so let’s keep the momentum going!

As of Thursday, September 15, 2022, the COVID-19 transmission level in Champaign County is HIGH. That means masks will be required in UUCUC's building for all activities until the transmission level drops to Medium or Low. When In-Person Fellowship Hour is scheduled, it will also be moved outside as the weather permits. Disposable masks for children and adults are available at UUCUC, but we encourage you to bring your own masks to wear. Please visit this link for UUCUC's current COVID Safety Guidelines.

The Red Herring Restaurant and the UU Channing Murray Foundation are dedicated to amplifying LGBTQ voices on campus! All are invited to attend the upcoming Queer Open Mic, on Sept 28. And if you aren’t sure whether the raucous packed house of the Open Mic is for you, try joining Rev. Sally for the more reflective “Open Write” space one week earlier (Sept 21) for a chance to write, share, and workshop reflections on sexuality, bodies, identity, and experience.

|
This coming Sunday, September 18, you will get to see the faces and hear the voices of our 6 member Transitions Team (T-Team) who held their two day “deep dive” retreat this week under the leadership of consultant and UUCUC member Laura Haber, Rev KB and team co chair Sam Beshers.

Norma Ione Hilsabeck was born to Louis and Edith (Shanks) Hilsabeck on April 8, 1925, in Pana, Illinois. She moved to Urbana in 1944. She married Bill Childers in 1947. In addition to being Bill’s partner in numerous projects and adventures, she was the executive secretary for Harlan Moore’s building supply business. In 1957, Norma had one son, also named Bill. After her husband Bill died in 1984, she spent winters in Ft. Myers, Florida, with her sister Lois. In 2002, Norma and Lois bought a house across the street from her son, Bill, his wife Barb, and most importantly, her grandchildren, Gwen and Wil lie. For the last 6 years, Willie has been Norma’s caretaker. Norma lived a long and vivid life until July 19, 2022, when she quietly slipped away surrounded by her family.
To celebrate Norma’s life, we will have a service at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Urbana-Champaign, 309 W. Green St., Urbana, on Friday, October 7, 2022, at 7 pm. Please bring a mask in case the church requires masks to be worn at that time.

All orders sent through Amazon are delivered to Julie's house and split between the two pantries. You are also welcome to drop off items in person at both locations. Questions? From Sam Beshers: Joy for all the sounds of children in the sanctuary.
From Sam Beshers: Joy and gratitude for each member of the Settled Search Team.
From Becky Densmore: Incredible & profound gratefulness to Lara, Kelly, and Natalie for their leadership and commitment to our child and RE&E.
From Joe & Sandy Finnerty: We have been working hard to get our house ready to sell. This week it went on the market and we sold it in 3 days. We will be moving to an independent living apartment at Clark Lindsey later this fall.
From Courtney Krafczyk: Today is Harlan's 6 month birthday. Happy to have him in our lives and be with you all today.
From Umeeta Sadarangani: Joy for the work of UUCUC’s Immigration Justice Taskforce on the “free garage sale” at Hessel Park Church yesterday. Several Afghan families who are new to our community were welcomed with items that will help them to make a home here. It was a heartwarming morning. (WCIA TV covered the event at 6 and 10).
From Umeeta Sadarangani: Joy and many thanks for the work of the Ministerial Search Committee.
From Genesis Synek: I am joyful for this drama on YouTube.
From Lynn Wiley: Such a joy to find RE in full bloom again. Thank you to the MANY who made this happen. And thank you to the children attending . we are happy to see you!!

SOCIAL ACTION OFFERING FOR SEPTEMBER 2022
|
|
Uniting Pride was founded in 2009 as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization to advocate for the equality, wellness, and visibility of the LGBTQ+ community in Champaign County. UP exists to create a community where all who identify as sexual and/or gender minorities can live full, healthy, and vibrant lives.
We have a few main areas of year-round work:
- Support and Social Groups
- Our support and social groups that serve everyone from our littlest littles up through our elders.
- Training and Education
- We offer free LGBTQ+ Cultural Competency training for anyone willing to have us. From schools to healthcare to private businesses to faith groups to community groups and more.
- Advocacy
- An area of growth for us is around Advocacy. Any organization like ours always works to put ourselves out of business. Our goal is that someday there’s no more need because the world is affirming and safe for everyone. Sadly, things are going the opposite direction. 2021 was the worst year in US history with the most anti-LGBTQ+ legislation ever passed and 2022 is on track to shatter that record. So we have formed an Advocacy committee to address this growing need.
- Programming
- And lastly, what we’re known best for: our events and programs. We produce the annual Pride Fest in the fall with our signature parade and fair and lots of other community programming. But we’ve also added a lot more this past year, from social to educational to adult to youth & family. We’re striving to create more safe and affirming socialization and community.
We need your help!
Of course, all of this takes resources to do. Uniting Pride is on an aggressive growth plan, again sadly, due to increased need. We’ve reached our max capacity based on the staff, funding, and resources we currently have, and yet there is so much more we could do if we had what we needed to do it. So if you’re lucky enough to be in a position to give, we thank you for helping us.
And we hope to see you at this year’s Pride Fest Sept 24th to Oct 2nd. Check out our website for information on the incredible week of programming we’re offering this year: unitingpride.org.
