A Conversation About Worship

Sunday, November 19, 2023

What lifts your spirit to God during our worship? What brings your spirit crashing back down to earth? These things are different for each of us, and may also change for us depending on what’s going on in our lives.

Updated service language, occasional applause from the congregation, a wider range of musical styles, equipment for broadcasting services online – do these or other changes add or detract from your experience of worship at Trinity Church?

The purpose of the meeting is not for us to debate about what is correct or incorrect for worship. The purpose is to share our own experience of what lifts us up so that we can understand each other better and enrich our worship together.

Please plan to join us following 10 o’clock worship on November 19.

Trinity's 2023 "Giving Tree"

Arrives 11/19!

This Advent, we are continuing Trinity's tradition of a "Giving Tree" - a tree set up in the Sanctuary, loaded with tags that list wishes from students at Trinity Academy and children from the Adopt-A-Social Worker program of Covenant to Care.

Our tree will be up on Sunday, 11/19, with tags for each of the children. Parishioners who wish to participate may chose a tag on this or a subsequent Sunday, purchase the item and place the gift under the tree by Sunday 12/10. We are committed to these children, and it is important that gifts be returned by this date so that they may be distributed.

With only 3 weeks to shop for and return the gifts, our elves will by busy! Please mark your calendars and plan to join in this festive event.

Women Together: a group that gathers weekly to explore our Christian faith and practice through book discussion, prayer and fellowship. We meet on Tuesdays from 2:00 to 3:15 pm in the reception room at St. John’s (679 Farmington Avenue, West Hartford, CT).

On Tuesday November 28, 2023, we will begin discussing Living Buddha Living Christ by Thich Nhat Hanh. “Thich Nhat Hanh has been part of a decades-long dialogue between two great contemplative traditions, and brings to Christianity an appreciation of its beauty that could be conveyed only by an outsider. In lucid, meditative prose, he explores the crossroads of compassion and holiness at which the two traditions meet, and he reawakens our understanding of both. “On the altar in my hermitage,” he says, “are images of Buddha and Jesus, and I touch both of them as my spiritual ancestors.”“

We will start by reading the Forward, Introduction and Parts 1-3 (through page 33). Don’t worry if you haven’t received your book yet, just read what you can and join us for discussion.

The books we choose are usually available at libraries, amazon.com and other booksellers.

WT has been attended by women from St. John’s, Trinity, St. James and St. Monica’s.

Please contact Linda MacGougan or Cathy Rowe if you would like additional information.

Jesus says: “love one another”

In our call to love and serve all people, please come and join your NC & NE Region Leadership Teams

as we come together to talk about church in the 21st century. Our conversations will be guided by the following four themes:

1. from leaders to left out - seasons of involvement

2. formation - all ages in all places

3. the care and feeding of our clergy

4. where can I find what I need on our ECCT website

In addition, we will also have time for worship and conversation with Bishops Jeff and Laura!

Please register and join us! Registration and more information can be found here.

O Antiphons

This reflective Advent program of choral and organ works is modeled after a tradition that dates back to the 6th century in Italy. The seven “O Antiphons” are represented most commonly in each of the verses of O Come, O Come Emmanuel. This service is similar to a Lessons & Carols program, with musical responses to scripture passages as we approach the Christmas season.

Trinity Book Group

All are invited to participate in Trinity's Book Group, meeting next on Friday, December 15th from 7 - 9 pm. French Braid, by contemporary author Anne Tyler, will be the featured book; it's widely available in libraries and bookstores. ”Full of heartbreak and hilarity, French Braid is classic Anne Tyler: a stirring, uncannily insightful novel of tremendous warmth and humor that illuminates the kindnesses and cruelties of our daily lives.” Amy Arlin will host Book Group at her home in Avon. Please let her know if you plan to attend; she'll send you directions - and make sure to have plenty of refreshments on hand! ([email protected])
