THE SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT

February 25, 2024

Dear George,

We observed the Great Litany on Lent One, the first Litany in English, authored by Archbishop Thomas Cranmer, the first English Archbishop following the break with Rome, during which England otherwise continued the Mass in Latin.

The Great Litany was often sung through the streets and in times of plague, war and national distress. It now heralds the major ecclesiastical seasons of Lent and of Advent, with occasional use when called upon to observe crisis.

It may be said the world is presently in crises, and our mortal souls touch crisis each day, and hence it was gratifying to make use of this first English Great Litany on the First Sunday in Lent.

Vestry meets in the Parish Hall at 10am this coming Friday, February 23.

TWICE MONTHLY THURSDAY EUCHARISTS AT LOS LABRADORES

Each first and third Thursday at 3pm sees a celebration of Holy Eucharist at Rancho Los Labradores.  Canon Frank Hebert, a resident of Rancho Los Labradores and Assisting Clergy at St. Paul's, leads the liturgies, which include hymns, a sermon, and Holy Eucharist.  Contact Canon Frank if you wish to assist or attend (the guard at the entrance will then be notified). Educafe is one of St. Paul's Community Development Projects. Educafe.org is a Mexican not-for profit raising educational funds from the sale of coffee grown in Oaxaca and Veracruz. Each bag is priced at 200 pesos, of which 87 pesos goes to a project of your selection. The QR code on the back of each bag allows you to select the project of your choice, a few of which support St. Paul's Community Development Project. Parishioner Geoffrey Drayton leads this effort, and welcomes all questions.

ST PAUL'S BEREAVEMENT GROUPS: Martha Hamill, thanatologist and bereavement counselor, leads groups in English and in Spanish. The pain of loss can be overwhelming, but there are healthy ways to learn to cope and heal. The groups are free of charge and occur in the conference room Tuesdays 4 - 5:30pm in Spanish and 5:30 - 6:30pm in English. The group is suspended until January 2024.

WOMEN'S SPIRITUALITY GROUP

Meetings are generally the first Saturday of each month at 10AM - 11:30 in the parish Church.

The next Book Club meeting will be on March 14^th at a later time: 11:00 a.m. This new time works best for the group so this will be permanent. The book we will discuss is The Red Tent by Anita Diamante. The narrator is Dinah, the only daughter of Jacob and Leah. Dinah is briefly mentioned in the book of Genesis. The story describes the traditions and turmoil of womanhood in ancient times and has been a favorite novel of readers and book groups for years. The author is an award-winning journalist who has written several books on contemporary Jewish life. The group will be led by Chris Durboraw who is a Vestry member and a well-read Book Club member herself.  Susan Robinson sporterrobinson@gmail.com
