Message from the Kip At Lee (Previous Longterm Senior Warden)
God Calling!
Let me begin with confession: I cringe when I hear the words “visioning” and “discernment.” (I’m cringing as I write this.)
I’m also not big on praying for miracles, or overtly professing confidence that, “God will answer our prayers.” For a guy who spent his life “under arms”, it’s just too gooey.
Worse yet, I’m constantly surprised when things I’ve been praying for happen! Oh, me of little faith.
(I went back to delete “constantly” from the preceding sentence sensing something of an overstatement, but I found my keyboard incapable of doing so. Perhaps because the surprise is fairly constant. (This demonstrates not only the depths of my skepticism, but the faithfulness of my Creator despite it.))
So, why do I bring these things up? It’s Father Andrew’s fault. He asked me to think a bit about his remarks in the newsletter suggesting that the “visioning” and “discerning” we are about to embark upon is not new to All Saints, but simply a worthy extension of things we did some years ago when times were a little challenging. It had occurred to us then that it might be beneficial if, collectively, we figured out what God had in mind for us. Talk about hubris! As though we could “know the mind of God!”
Not sure we ever figured that out, but we did convince ourselves that the Parish had some pretty good clues and pursued them over the course of several years. To our joy, and despite some stumbles along the way, many of the fine things about All Saints, today, grew out of that.
These included clarifying our values and letting them better guide our activities, broadening our understanding of Parish “membership”; consciously extending our role in the community to include leadership on many issues; conceiving C4 and establishing it both as a Parish mission and a community based organization; transitioning our Parish to a solid fiscal base; renewing our commitment to Tithe parish income, extending our Outreach efforts to include dedicating the Calvert Arts Festival to benefit others; the ECW more closely integrating with Parish programs generally; substantial improvements in the Parish buildings and grounds, creation of the Parish Family Commission and Worship Commission that have enhanced our Parish life and worship; establishment of the Connections Commission as “the tie that binds”. Indeed, many of the results of our last collective discernment laid the foundation for All Saints to thrive during Covid and maintain community almost seamlessly. (To view and read the entire Strategic Objectives from 2020, CLICK HERE)
So, what’s my takeaway?
Strangely enough: If you do the hard work of visioning, discernment and acting as though God will provide, God does.
On Sunday, June 9th after the Joint 9am Service, we'll come together to share, pray, and again seek to understand what God would have us do. I hope you come.

Project Spudnik
Learn how your freshest food comes from the ground, not your local grocery store!
Project Spudnik's next work sessions are from 10 AM to noon, May 25; June 8 and 22. We hope you can join us as we play in the dirt to make things grow. Check out our new high beds, perfect spots to garden for those who can want to roll up in their wheel chairs or need to use a walker.
Bring your gloves! Bring your tools! Bring a friend! We've already started to harvest spring crops.
As always, youth volunteers receive community service credit for their work in the garden, as all produce grown is given to area food banks. Master Gardener Mimi Miller (millerfam1976@verizon.net) can answer any questions you may have about Project Spudnik.
Come on out and bring a friend!
