A new study from Frontiers in Nutrition found that infusing the human digestive tract with protease substantially increases the digestion of proteins.

The authors state that those who would benefit most from digestive enzymes are older persons, athletes, those with certain digestive orders, those taking acid reflux medication, those with food intolerances and food allergies, those adhering to vegetarian or vegan diets, among others.

While this study focused only on protease, most digestive enzyme supplements contain enzymes for carbohydrate and fat absorption, among others.

Steve: Weight loss drugs such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro have increased in popularity so drastically that they are in short supply and counterfeit drugs are rampant. The number of case studies espousing deleterious side effects grows by the week. Moreover, research has shown that most people stop these drugs within one year and in most cases, the weight comes back.

The active ingredient in these medications is the gastrointestinal glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist semaglutide. GLP-1 receptor agonists exert multiple effects:

• Suppress glucagon secretion (which increases the amount of glucose in the bloodstream)
• Suppress gluconeogenesis (the process of turning proteins and fats into glucose)
• Delays gastric emptying (the speed at which your body empties your stomach contents)
• Stimulates satiety (feeling of being full)
• Stimulates lipolysis (using stored fat tissue for energy)
• Stimulates insulin secretion (regulates metabolism of carbohydrates)

This all seems amazing. However, by overstimulating a natural, biochemical process with medication does not go unpunished.

If there were other processes that naturally stimulate GLP-1, wouldn't that be wonderful? It just so happens that we have some already! Of course, you should always work with a knowledgable health professional before considering the following:

Akkermansia muciniphila, the star gut microflora strain, acts as a GLP-1 stimulator. A. muciniphila has been shown to increase thermogenesis, GLP-1 secretion and brown adipose tissue.

Bifidobacterium, another gut microflora star, also plays a role analogous to GLP-1 receptor agonists.

Dietary polyphenols such as olive oil, pomegranates and blueberries stimulate the release of GLP-1.

Fecal short chain fatty acids (SCFA) provide a lingering physical tone to stimulate release of GLP-1.

Berberine, an isoquinoloine alkaloid that has been attributed to anti-inflammatory effects, may increase GLP-1.

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glycine increase GLP-1 when adhering to proper eating hygiene. Eating hygiene includes smelling cooked food to stimulate digestive enzymes, sitting down to eat, chewing food and consuming meals with others.

Caloric restriction eating styles have also been shown to stimulate GLP-1.

As you can see, the cupboard is far from bare when it comes to stimulating GLP-1 and reducing appetite naturally.
