Wekiva High School Community Brief

Monday, November 2, 2026

A Message from Principal Russell

Wekiva Community Member,

As we begin another week, one thing is unmistakable across every hallway, and classroom: Wekiva High School is moving with purpose.

It is easy to measure academic success purely by report cards and test dates, but what happened on our campus this week past went much deeper. We saw the quiet, powerful breakthroughs that often go uncelebrated.

Students who didn’t just finish assignments, but stayed after the bell to ask that one question that unlocked a difficult concept.

Scholars leaning over desks to coach classmates through challenging problems, building a culture where everyone rises together.

Teachers fine-tuning lesson plans on the fly, finding fresh, creative entry points to make complex material click for every learner in the room.

Parents reinforcing routines at home and staff members offering the words of encouragement that kept our students focused and energized.

Success isn’t an accident, it is the compound interest of these daily choices. Every rigorous discussion, every rewritten essay, and every mastered standard proves that our potential has no ceiling.

Celebrating our wins doesn’t mean resting on them, it means recognizing what we are capable of and raising our expectations. Moving the academic needle isn’t about dramatic, overnight shifts; it’s about relentless, intentional execution.

The hardest part of the problem is where actual growth happens. When the content feels demanding, lean in, that friction is knowledge taking root. Coming prepared, active note-taking, engaging in discourse, and turning in work with pride. Excellence is built on habits, not luck.

When school, home, and community pull in the exact same direction, our students become unstoppable.

Wekiva is not just a place where students earn credits; it is where future engineers, leaders, artists, and innovators are forging their grit. We have the vision, we have the talent, and most importantly, we have the heart.

Thank you for your tireless dedication to our campus. Let’s return this week ready to push the standard even higher.

We Are All In… No Excuses!

If no one told you they Love You, Mr. Russell Loves You, and there is nothing you can do about it.

Student Government

On October 28, Wekiva SGA President England Browder and Social Media Ambassador Amari Griffin delivered cards filled with encouraging messages written and signed by Wekiva students to local cancer centers. Created in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the cards offered hope and support to women facing breast cancer, reminding them that the entire Mustang family stands with them.

Yearbook

Thank you to the Honorable Val Demings, former U.S. Congress Representative Val Demings and Orlando’s first female police chief, for visiting Wekiva High School for an interview with our yearbook committee. We appreciate your time and willingness to share your experiences and insights with our students!

Academics

Geometry with Mr. Lubin and Ms. Sadek

Students in Mr. Lubin and Ms. Sadek’s geometry class are sharpening their reasoning skills as they explore triangle congruence! Through guided examples and practice, students examine diagrams, identify relationships and explain the evidence behind their answers. Our Mustangs are building their understanding one problem at a time!

Effective use of Anchor Charts with Ms. Rodney

Learning is on display in Ms. Rodney’s classroom! Colorful anchor charts give students handy reminders for using context clues, practicing close reading and exploring literary concepts. These visual tools reinforce lessons and encourage students to apply reading strategies independently.

ELA with Ms. Gibbs-Godfrey

Students in Ms. Gibbs-Godfrey’s English language arts class are taking an epic journey through The Odyssey! Working together, they examine the text and identify conflicts that drive the story’s action. With Ms. Gibbs-Godfrey’s guidance, our Mustangs are strengthening their close reading and literary analysis skills.

Culinary and Agriscience Academies on Display

Wekiva’s Mustangs were in the spotlight at October's OCPS School Choice Expo at Lake Buena Vista High School!
