Greetings TBLA Parents/Guardians:

Welcome to the 2019-2020 School Year at Thea Bowman Leadership Academy! We are excited that you chose to send your scholars to our educational institution this year. We wanted to provide a few details about this upcoming school year.

·         We operate on trimesters affording our scholars fewer courses at a time with more in-depth coverage. This also increases the maximum number of credits that can be earned in a given school year.
·         The school day begins at 8:30 AM and ends at 3:45 PM.
·         Scholars are able to enter the building at 7:00 AM through the cafeteria doors and must exit the building at 4:00 if they are not playing a Fall sport.
·         All scholars will receive bi-weekly progress reports beginning Aug 29 th .
·         All afterschool activities (including Title I tutoring) will begin the Week of Monday, September 16 th . 
·         Our fall sports program has commenced.
·         Scholars must be in FULL TBLA UNIFORM by Monday, August 26, 2019. There will be NO EXCEPTIONS !
·         If you have not already done so, please download the Infinite Campus (Grades & Attendance) and Kickboard (Incentive-Based Behavior program) apps.

Dear Thea Bowman Leadership Academy Jr. High Families,

Welcome Back!
I hope you enjoyed a wonderful summer break. I also hope you are relaxed, recharged and ready to start a new school year. I am so delighted that you are part of our amazing learning community. I welcome and value your positive energy and dedication to excellence in education, and I look forward to working with you and your children.

All signs point to an incredible and productive school year. Our skilled and devoted staff has planned and prepared for your child(ren). Our enthusiastic office team is registering new families, ordering needed materials and updating scholar files. Our hard working and conscientious custodians have spent the entire summer thoroughly cleaning the facilities. We are indeed a joyous and caring community with the common goal of nurturing responsible, caring scholars and promoting high-level learning.

New Staff
Each year brings positive change. This includes some new additions to the Junior High staff. We are delighted to welcome some new talent: Ms. Ana Long (Math 7), Mr. Sean Carter-Hopkins (ELA 7), Ms. Shlinda Greer (Social Studies 7), Ms. Jeannette Graham (Science 7), Mr. Darren Guess (Social Studies 8) and Ms. Ariel Israel (Science 8).

Student Placement
A great deal of time, effort and thought has gone into the process of student placement for the 2019-2020 school year.

Careful consideration was given to input from all stakeholders as well as student learning styles. Classrooms have been balanced academically and socially. Out class lists are structured to provide equitable class sizes at each grade level. ALL of our staff works hard to make school a positive experience for ALL scholars. TBLA is eagerly looking forward to enriching your child’s life. Thank you for understanding that it can take a few weeks for a child to acclimate to a new grade, peer group and teacher.

Thank you to all who helped prepare for the new school year. Your commitment to ensuring that TBLA remains a celebrated and successful school is awe-inspiring. I eagerly look forward to greeting students and families daily.  It remains an honor and privilege to serve as the Junior High Principal. Please stop by and say hello. Together I know we will make this school year one of growth and achievement for all scholars.

From The Desk of the Dean
Greetings Scholars and Familes!
My name is Mrs. McNeal, I am the new Dean here at TBLA. I am truly excited about this new journey that I am embarking on with you and your scholars. I join TBLA with ten years of charter school experience. My philosophy when dealing with scholars is simple, I believe there is no such thing as a “bad” child. All children seek to be loved, cherished and respected. As the school year gets into full swing there are a few reminders for our scholars and familes. 

Uniforms
Effective Monday August 26, 2019, All scholars must be in Full compliance with our uniform policy.

Cell phone policy
Scholars are not to use cellphones in the school between the hours of 7:00 a.m - 3:45 p.m.

Lockers
All scholars must have a locker with a combination lock on it. Locks may be purchased for $5.00 from the school or scholars may bring in their own combination lock. Students are not allowed to take backpacks to class, they must secure all items in their locker. Scholars are not allowed to share lockers.

Purses/Handbags
Effective Monday young ladies are allowed to carry a wristlet or Fannie pack in the building during the school day. If a purse larger than the above mentioned is carried, it must be secured in the scholars locker until the end of the school day.

As we continue through this year, it is my sincere hope that together WE can ensure the best school experience for our scholars. To meet this challenge we need the support of YOU, the parents to assist us in making sure your scholar is in full compliance with the schools expectations.

You can now purchase your uniforms at the TBLA online store. Click the link to place an order.
8th Grade Cap and Gown pictures will be taken Saturday, September 21, 2019 here at the school from 9am until 4pm.

You may pick up the package forms in the office. Cap and Gown will be provided by the photographer.
Basic package is $30

Things to remember:
  • Ladies- please refrain from up hair styles as you will be wearing a cap.
  • All scholars should wear a white top
  • males- button down
  • tie is preferred but not required
