New Year Resolutions….or Goals?
The past year may go down in history as one of PIA of Tennessee’s best.  We experienced growth in almost every area of focus, as well as a renewed momentum.   If you have been connected, you have seen many of the changes we have made to revitalize and change the momentum of the Association.  As we embark upon 2019, we will likely see even more excitement and change.  We are in the process of redefining what the PIA of Tennessee will be for the coming year and the future of this industry.  Similar to an individual’s New Years resolutions to get healthy and fit, our Association is continuing our efforts to be a strong, more valuable entity for this industry.    But, as you know, resolutions often get set aside after the excitement of the new year wears off.   But, goals  do not .   So, let’s resolve to make some goals for 2019, instead of resolutions.

We  resolve  that we will make sure that state and federal  legislative  actions are friendly and supportive of our industry and our clients.  We will develop resources to help our members grow their  commercial lines  books of business.  We will develop and strengthen  strategic alliances  with resources which can help our members be  stronger, more effective agencies . We will improve our  communications  to assist agencies with value information.  We will help strengthen our  local chapters , so member can engage with other agents and industry professionals.  Our  Young Insurance Professionals program will grow, as well as our new  Women’s Insurance Council . Our convention on  June 19-20th in Murfreesboro  will be the best attended and most exciting in the past 10 years, and will provide attendees with information, networking, and events that will help their agencies and companies.

Now is the time for us all to band together!  Reach out to your friends in this industry.  Invite them to connect to the PIA.  And, as always, we are here to support and assist you.

STAY CONNECTED: PIA Federal Legislative Summit

PIA praised Congress for reaching a bipartisan agreement and passing the Farm Bill, which preserves vital crop insurance provisions. The Senate passed the bill on December 11 by a vote of 87-13. The House followed suit on December 12, approving the bill by a vote of 369-47.

The fate of the Farm Bill, which includes jurisdiction over the federal crop insurance program, had been up in the air since the House and Senate entered into a conference committee in July.

"We are pleased that Congress was able to agree on a compromise, bipartisan Farm Bill that includes strong support for the federal crop insurance program," said Jon Gentile, PIA's Vice President of Government Relations. "The 2018 Farm Bill recognizes the need for a strong federal crop insurance program and the vital role that independent agents play in its delivery."
PIA Praises Extension of National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) to May 31

WASHINGTON  — The National Association of Professional Insurance Agents (PIA) is pleased the U.S. House and Senate have passed a bill to reauthorize the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) until May 31. The program was set to expire at midnight December 21. This bill will prevent a lapse of the program, which would have disrupted the lives of millions of NFIP policyholders.

“An extension to May 31 will allow members of the incoming 116 th  Congress time to find a way to agree on reforms to the program and to pass a long-term reauthorization," said Jon Gentile, PIA National vice president of government relations.

PIA National looks forward to working with the 116 th  Congress on a long-term reauthorization of the NFIP.

Marriott International, one of the largest hotel chains in the world, revealed that its Starwood reservations database had been hacked and that up to 500 million guests could be affected . The data breach involved information mined from the reservations database for Starwood properties, which include Sheraton, Westin and St. Regis hotels, among others.

An unauthorized party had accessed the database since 2014, company officials said. The breach included names, email addresses, passport numbers and payment information.
Marriott's breach is one of the biggest in history, second only to Yahoo's breaches in 2013 and 2014, which affected 3 billion user accounts.
