2024 is gearing up to be a great year for Roanoke Parks and Recreation, and we're excited to share our upcoming programs and events with you! From returning favorites like the 100 Miler Challenge to brand-new programs like the Winter Wonderland Hike and Warm Springs Float, we've got something for everyone! We look forward to our continued work "building a welcoming community through PLAY" in the new year!

START THE YEAR WITH DOGEBALL!

This is THE tournament for you to start your year in a fun way! Teams can be made up of 6–12 participants, so grab at least five friends, co-workers, family members, or…well, anyone! Irrational team names and attire are optional, but highly recommended! See you February 3!

GET BACK TO NATURE

Our Nature Lab series are back in 2024! If you are not familiar with this program, Nature Lab is a 6-week, SOL based science program for homeschool and virtual students, age 8-13. Two sessions to choose from:

VOLUNTEER TO HELP ROANOKE'S TREES

Roanoke Parks and Recreation’s Urban Forestry division is offering a training for volunteer Tree Stewards, starting January 22. Tree Stewards play a pivotal role in keeping the city's urban tree canopy healthy and protected. The training runs nine weeks, from January 22 to March 18.

introducing PROJECT WET: This program features a collection of 64 field-tested, hands-on activities and lessons for grades K-12. Content ranges from local to global, from laboratory to the field, and can be used in a wide range of teaching settings.

ROANOKE'S FAVORITE FITNESS TRADITION!

Every year, hundreds of people in the Roanoke Valley celebrate the start of the new year by accepting the Roanoke 100 Miler Challenge! All you need to do is commit to walking, running, or hiking 100 miles in 100 days (Or substitute 1 mile with a 30-minute human-powered activity.) Throughout the challenge you will receive encouraging emails, check-ins, and fitness tips. You will also be entered to win gift cards and prizes! Registration is open through January 20th.
