St. John’s family,

I am excited to announce, with the Bishop’s blessing and the Vestry’s consent, that Dr. J. T. Hewitt has accepted the position of Assistant Rector & Scholar in Residence at St. John’s Church.

JT is a Florence native and Furman graduate who holds multiple postgraduate degrees, including a PhD in New Testament Language, Literature, and Theology from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. Since receiving his doctorate in 2018, he has served in higher education—first at the University of Aberdeen and most recently as Lecturer in New Testament and Christian Origins at the University of Edinburgh.

Before moving to Scotland, JT was ordained in the Presbyterian Church and served as Assistant Pastor of Central Presbyterian Church in St. Louis, Missouri. Prior to that, he served at Grace Church Anglican in Seattle, Washington. He is married to Andrea, and together they have four children: Henrik, Avonlea, Madeleine, and Nikolai.

I have greatly enjoyed getting to know JT since we were first introduced in December. His experience in the church, academic pedigree, and family roots in Florence make him a unique gift to St. John’s. Above all, though, I have come to know him as a man of deep gospel conviction who seeks to honor Christ with the thoughtfulness and clarity, and the gentleness and respect, to which Peter calls the Church in 1 Peter 3:15–16.

JT will take on the full responsibilities of the Assistant Rector while also serving as our Scholar in Residence, helping develop initiatives that strengthen the church and our greater community through grounded, accessible, and theologically deep Christian formation.

He and his family will join us mid-July. Please pray for them as they finish well their current chapter and prepare for life and ministry in Florence.

To God be the glory,

Corey

Greetings in Christ from Scotland. I'm very much looking forward to joining you this summer. Andrea, and I, and our children are excited to be moving back to the US and for me to be stepping into this new role. We will keep you in our prayers in the coming weeks. Please pray for us as we say our goodbyes and prepare for this new chapter.
