It is with immense joy that we send a heartfelt congratulations to Angela and Council President Elo-Rivera on the arrival of their beautiful baby boy, Benicio! Parenthood is an incredible journey filled with love, laughter, and new beginnings, and we have no doubt that your family will cherish every moment of it.
We hope this precious addition will bring you endless happiness, cherished memories, and a lifetime of love and adventures together. Your baby is a true blessing, and I have no doubt that they will grow up to be as amazing as their parents. We are here to celebrate with you and support you in any way we can.

Budget Survey & Key Budget Dates
The next cycle of the City’s budget is beginning and we want to hear from YOU! Council President Elo-Rivera wants to hear from residents, business owners and workers, and people with a stake in the success of District 9 about YOUR funding priorities.
Please let us know what your priorities are by completing our survey by tomorrow (Friday, September 22nd). Complete the survey at sdd9.info/survey!
The survey results will help determine our budget priorities for Fiscal Year 2025, which starts on July 1, 2024.

Repaving of Redwood Street in Castle
Check out these smooth streets in Castle! Areas of City Heights, specifically the Castle Neighborhood and Fairmount Village, are getting new asphalt overlay this month. And in January, we will also be getting 14 new streetlights.
Huge shoutout to Castle and Fairmount Village residents for advocating for these much needed improvements. Along with residents, the District 9 Office included these priorities in the budget and community engagement cycle back in 2021.

Opening of Park de la Cruz Garden
Everyone was all smiles at the community garden ribbon cutting at Park de la Cruz! Congratulations to all the staff at the Park de la Cruz Community Center, Parks & Rec, and the San Diego Parks Foundation on all of your incredible work.
The new garden has accessible garden beds, shade coverings, and more for older adults, individuals with disabilities and other community volunteers.

Hispanic & Latine Heritage Month | |

September 15th through October 15th commemorates Hispanic & Latine Heritage Month. This month we celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of people in our Hispanic and Latine communities while acknowledging that these communities make history every single day.

Hispanic? Latine? Latinx? Latin@? These terms are not definitive of everyone’s experiences and all are valid. Join us as we celebrate and uplift the work of all our Hispanic and Latine communities.

Adams Ave Street Fair
The 41st annual Adams Avenue Street Fair will be on Saturday, September 23rd and Sunday, September 24th. Southern California’s largest free two-day music festival is held each year in September in our very own community of Normal Heights. Shoutout to the Adams Avenue Business Association for all of their work organizing it!
This year, the Street Fair has expanded two additional blocks and is 10 blocks-long, featuring carnival rides, beer gardens, beer tastings, festival foods and 300 exhibitors with unique offerings.

Ending Girls Incarceration
Join Mid-City CAN tonight (Thursday, September 21, 2023) from 5-7:30PM for a Networking Night focused on Ending Girls Incarceration. San Diego County probation has recently received funding from the state Office of Youth and Community Restoration to partner with the Vera Institute of Justice to end girls incarceration. Vera Institute of Justice's EGI initiative aims to zero out the incarceration of girls and gender-expansive youth in the country’s juvenile legal system by 2030.
Panelists will share details about the initiative, ongoing work with young girls impacted by the justice system, the closure of state juvenile detentions.
This is a great opportunity to discuss potential alternatives to incarceration for young girls. Vera Institute of Justice will support the process with their expertise on establishing the networks in counties across the U.S.

City Heights Mural - Community Paint Day
ArtReach and Children First Collective are bringing a new mural to the welcome wall of the Copley-Price Family YMCA! Lead by an amazing City Heights-based parent advocate, Monique Rosas, this is going to be a community-driven project and your thoughts are welcome. Fill out our online input form to share your ideas on for the mural on this form!
Everyone is welcome to sign up and join the Community Mural Paint Day at The Copley-Price Family YMCA (4300 El Cajon Boulevard) on Friday, September 29 from 3 to 7pm!

Free Ride Day!
We are 2 weeks away from Free Ride Day taking place on Wednesday, October 4th! Trolleys, COASTER, SPRINTER, and fixed-route buses will be totally free. Take free transit rides to and from work, school, or to play! More Info: sdd9.info/freeride
Free Ride Day is being held in conjunction with California’s Clean Air Day, where residents across the state of California will take steps to reduce emissions and improve air quality.

Volunteers Needed
Immigrant Defenders Law Center and Interfaith Community Services is need of local volunteers to assist in providing crucial aid to newly arrived migrants. This is a grassroots effort and ImmDef staff will provide training onsite and in accordance with issues as they arise. Both organizations are looking for volunteers for Oceanside and Southbay locations.
Volunteers may be asked to help migrants with figuring out travel, transit options, identify shelter needs, use of your phone to contact relatives, shuttling some arrivals to airport, and interpreters to identify individual needs.

Design Options Survey for OB Pier
The City of San Diego is hoping you can help spread the word about a survey for the Ocean Beach Pier Renewal Project. At the third community meeting on September 9, the City of San Diego presented three preliminary design concepts for a new pier. For those who couldn't make it to the meeting, there is an option learn about the project and to take an online survey by going to www.OBPierRenewal.com.
The OB Pier Renewal project will serve all San Diego's residents by providing equitable access to the ocean. The preferred design concept will be unveiled early next year.
