Eisenhower Eagle Express

"Engage ALL students in experiences that inspire EACH to grow as learners, individuals, and community members."

August 9th, 2023

Welcome Back!

Dear Eisenhower Families

As we enter the last couple weeks of August, I hope this letter finds you and your family refreshed and rejuvenated for the upcoming school year.

We are looking forward to a wonderful year ahead of us and seeing all of our students and families.

Please read through the entire newsletter on pertinent information related to our student drop-off and pick-up.

Your child’s teacher placement will be viewable in your PowerSchool Parent Portal today at 10:00 AM.

I know our staff is eagerly anticipating hearing about the many family outings and vacations that occurred over the summer.  Seeing the children back at school is something we are all looking forward to, as our Eagles soar into new grade levels and experiences. Encouraging them both academically and socially is our greatest joy. But, above all, it is our communication and partnership with one another that allows the children to succeed. It is our teamwork between home and school that will carry the children onto many successful achievements over the course of their educational journey.

Sneak Peek Reminder

On Tuesday, August 15th, 8:00-8:30 AM, we will have a sneak peek for all of our students and families. In order to help with first day arrival, we ask that you please drop off supplies at this time.

Early Childhood and Kindergarten Playdates Reminder

*Just a reminder, our early childhood and kindergarten playdates are on Saturday, August 12th (Sunday, 13th is our rain date).

10:00 AM -11:00 AM (Early Childhood Classes)

11:00 AM -12:00 PM (Kindergarten Classes)

  • The Prospect Heights Public Library will be present to help your child apply for a library card.
  • The Prospect Heights Park District will be sharing some information on upcoming programs.
  • The Prospect Heights Police and Fire Department will be visiting.
  • Boys Scout and Girl Scout Troop Leaders will be available to share information about joining the pack/troop.

Arrival and Dismissal Procedures

We just want to take a moment to review arrival and dismissal procedures.

*All Bus Riders will Enter and Exit from our Front Doors to the Front Lot.

*All Car Riders will Enter and Exit from our Back Library Doors to the Back Circle Lot.

AM Early Childhood students being dropped off will be able to enter the building at 8:00 AM.

Kindergarten and First Grade students being dropped off will be able to enter the building at 8:15 AM.

AM Early Childhood students will dismiss at 10:45 AM.

PM Early Childhood car rider students will dismiss at 2:20 PM.

AM Kindergarten students will dismiss at 11:00 AM.

PM Kindergarten back library doors will be able to enter the back library doors at 11:55 AM.

PM/Full Day Kindergarten & First Grade car riders will dismiss at 2:25 PM.

In order to prevent traffic jams and frustration with pickup capacity, we ask that parents please wait in line through the rectangular park district lot along Camp McDonald Rd.

Drivers will be able to utilize the park district lot as an “off the street option” for waiting for pick-up, minimizing the volume and time of cars waiting on Camp McDonald Rd.

Car traffic may only enter the circle lot while heading westbound on Camp McDonald.

No left turn will be allowed.

We ask that Early Childhood Parents pick up at 2:20 PM and that Kindergarten and First Grade Parents wait until 2:25 or even 2:30 PM to begin lining up. This should help to reduce the number of cars arriving at the same time and expedite pick-up.

Just a reminder, a parent or guardian must be present for all Early Childhood, Kindergarten, and First Grade students to get off the school bus.

Transportation Procedures

To find out the whereabouts of your student’s bus, call First Student at (847) 541-0220 and ask for the dispatcher.

Due to time constraints, buses will not return to a bus stop when students miss the bus or an adult (when required) is not present to receive the student. Students will be returned to their home school and parents/guardians will need to pick up their child from the school. The bus will not return.

Changes to bus routes require a minimum of 3 working days to be implemented.

No changes to bus routes will be processed during the first 2 weeks of school.

What if there is a change in my child's transportation arrangements? Please send a note with your child or call the school office at (847) 870-3875. Without a note, we will send your child home on the school bus if that is how your child normally goes home.

All children who are to be excused from school prior to the regular end of the school day must "check out" through the school office. Parents are asked to send a note ahead of time, rather than call, to request an early release for their children. Parents are required to come into the school office to sign their children out for early dismissal. District policy does not allow any adult to go directly to the classroom.

Technology Support

As the year starts, we want to share practices we have found to be effective for keeping students safe and engaged when using the internet at home, whether they are using the District-issued iPad or a home device, like a phone, gaming console, or tablet. As educators and parents, we know the value and importance of having strong routines and practices, and we hope this information can help you and your household start this new school year off well!

  1. Take extra steps to protect your child. Encourage your child to use and store the iPad in an open area of your home, such as the kitchen or family room, so you can monitor what your child is doing online. Review the parental controls available to you via your internet provider.
  2. Go where your child goes online. Monitor the places that your child visits. Let your child know that you’re there, and help teach her/him how to act as s/he works and socializes online.
  3. Review your child’s contacts list. You may want to limit your child’s online “contacts” to people your child actually knows and is working with in real life.
  4. Balancing the time your student is on the iPad. While the iPad is a very engaging device, it is important to set reasonable limits for your child.
  5. Report unwelcome or malicious online threats. Report immediately any online interactions that can be considered threatening.
  6. Help your child develop a routine. Many parents have found success by helping create a routine for their child’s device use. Define a routine as to how the iPad is cared for and when and where its use is appropriate.
  7. Familiarize yourself with the apps and programs. It is important that parents have a working understanding of the programs and student work found on the iPad.

“Need help with a program, an app, or the iPad itself? To quote an old Radioshack slogan, “You’ve got questions, we’ve got answers!” Sullivan and MacArthur students should submit a ticket using the Incident IQ app. Eisenhower and Ross families should either put in the ticket on behalf of their student or work with the teacher, who would put in a ticket on behalf of the student. We also have our Tech Help Site, HERE, which has resources and “How-to” guides. If you find yourself needing more immediate support, email us at “techhelp@d23.org.” Together, we are #PROUD2BD23!”

Century Book Club

Century Book Club Readers!

The Principal's Century Book Club is a listing of children who read multiples of one hundred books during their years at Eisenhower School.

*Books can be read by parents or enjoy a shared reading with your child. Take turns, use voices, and, most importantly, have fun!

Remember to ask plenty of comprehension questions and discuss new vocabulary words!

Your child’s name will be added to the front foyer wall when they read their first one hundred books. Their name continues to be added with each 100 books they read.

Students will also receive a special prize from the office.

Books should be at the child’s reading level, and left to parent’s discretion.

Below, is a link to a form that you can download and print.

You may also list the books on a sheet of paper.

Setting aside 20-minutes a night for family reading with or to your child makes a world of difference.

Respectful, Responsible, & Safe

"Be a friend to others and make yourself and those around you a wonderful day by being

Respectful, Responsible, and Safe in all that you do!"

As children, we usually associate school only with academics. However, as adults, we realize lifelong learning is moe about how we engage in the social world around us and how we manage our emotions and relationships. This ability to control, manage, and regulate our behavior in order to be a productive member of our family, community, nation, and world relies on having appropriate and consistent learned behaviors modeled for us. In essence, it is our duty to teach appropriate behavioral expectations the same as we teach academic learning objectives. Our goal is to work with your child and help teach him/her appropriate ways to interact with his/her peers and adults in an engaging, positive, and safe learning environment. Developing appropriate social skills takes time and being consistent. More importantly, it gives us essential personal and group problem-solving skills to overcome adversity, stay productive, and have a positive outlook on life. Everyday, we remind the students to be friend to others and to make themselves and those around them a wonderful day by being respectful, responsible, and safe in all that they do. If there are any students who are not demonstrating appropriate behavior, they will be retaught the appropriate behavioral expectation, and, if that does not remedy the situation, they could possibly receive additonal support through a variety of tiered interventions. The most import aspect of the IKE Path is reinforcing the behaviors we desire in seeing displayed. As with all things in life, positive emotions are evoked through the power of praise and redeeming feelings. The more we model and praise the resulting appropriate/expected behaviors, the more we will see our children growing up to become more empathetic individuals who can make better decisions for themselves and those around them.
