Cal State LA Interim President Leroy M. Morishita welcomes students to the fall 2023 semester.

Welcome Back

In his first major address, Interim President Leroy M. Morishita welcomed the University community to the new academic year during University Convocation. “For the next few months, I will be working alongside you, helping to move the University forward until your next president is selected and takes office,” Morishita said to a packed Luckman Theatre on Aug. 17. “And I am happy to be here with you at a university that I have long admired.” Morishita shared his priorities and praised faculty and staff for their work on behalf of students. During the event, five faculty scholars were also honored for their excellence in teaching and exceptional commitment to students as well as professional accomplishments and services. Howard Xu (Biological Sciences) was presented this year's President's Distinguished Professor Award. The Outstanding Professor Awards went to John C. Bachman (Mechanical Engineering), James Ford III (Music), and Mitchell Eisen (Psychology). Dmitri Seals (Sociology) received the Outstanding Lecturer Award. Read about the faculty award recipients. Interim President Morishita also sent a video greeting to students, which you can watch by clicking the image above.

Support following the loss of a beloved colleague

Last week we learned of the tragic passing of Professor Ray de Leon from a heart attack. A Cal State LA faculty member since 2001, de Leon was the director of the School of Kinesiology, created the University’s Mobility Center, and was a beloved colleague, friend, and mentor to many on campus. The sudden loss of a colleague and friend can leave us struggling with a range of emotions. Staff and faculty may find counseling assistance through the Employee Assistance Program, LifeMatters, by calling 1-800-367-7474 or visiting the LifeMatters website. Should you have any questions about the program or need the company password, please email [email protected]. A memorial page for de Leon has been created and will be updated as information about services becomes available.

Food options at Cal State LA

The newest food option at Cal State LA is Panda Express, which has now opened in the Golden Eagle Food Court. Cal State LA offers a variety of food options at more than a dozen venues across campus. Many of our venues provide healthy choices, including salads, wraps, fruit, and other items. A Mycha milk tea ATM, located in front of the food court, offers an assortment of boba or bubble drinks. The Village Commons features a buffet and rotating menu of dishes and is available to students, faculty, and staff at the South Village residence halls. You can find a list of food options and updated hours on the Food on Campus website.

Circle Drive reopens for vehicular traffic

A stretch of Circle Drive on the south end of campus has been reopened to vehicles. With the reopening of the road, buses are again picking up and dropping off at the Transit Center on the south side of campus. Those who park in Parking Structure B can now enter and exit the structure off Circle Drive. The reopening of the road will help with the flow of vehicular traffic entering and leaving campus. However, the area will remain closed to pedestrians through September while sidewalks are being replaced.

Reminder regarding face masks on campus

Face masks are not required on campus except inside the Student Health Center. Students, faculty, staff, and visitors are always welcome to wear a mask if they choose to do so. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health recommends individuals determine whether to wear a mask based on their preference and personal risk. Additional information can be found on our Health Watch website.
