Fall 2022 Mini-Course

Technology, Humanity, and Social Justice

November 4th - 6th, 2022

As humans rely more and more on electronic devices to support their everyday activities, there are ever present warnings about the impacts such reliance has on human autonomy ranging from who owns and controls information networks, the inequitable impact of technology consumption on peoples and places, varying accessibility of technology around the globe, and the promises and limitations of technology in improving human health.

In Fall 2022, the mini-course's focus will be on humanity’s use of technology and the disparate impacts on and benefits to the environment and varying groups of people.

Global Academic Partnership (GAP) Spotlight

Tyler Bickford, Professor of Children's Literature and Childhood Studies and 2022-2024 GAP Recipient

Over the next two years, Pitt’s Children’s Literature Program will partner with the Children’s Literature Unit at Newcastle University in the UK to launch a global scholarly network focused on children’s literature and social justice. The Children’s Literature Programs at Pitt and Newcastle have collaborated closely since 2018, and the Global Academic Partnership award will allow them to grow their network to include partner institutions in Europe, Asia, and Latin America. They will host a series of virtual and in person events (including simultaneous interpretation) focused on exploring the diverse meanings of social justice in children’s literature from different regions and sharing works that have not been translated into English. They hope to launch a critical series of translations of children’s books with social justice themes that have not been recognized by traditional publishers.

GAP Applications

The Global Academic Partnership (GAP) grant provides $40,000 over two years to help Pitt scholars build and sustain meaningful global partnerships, to enrich the intellectual environment at Pitt through bringing innovative events and programming to campus, and to support and amplify the priorities of the Global Studies Center (applications due March 1, 2023).
