MMS Monthly E-Newsletter | August 2019
Dear MMS families,

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! We are off to a great start, and it's been wonderful to see our returning and new students at school this week.

Please note the reminders below:

  • If your child needs to take medication at school, you must bring the medication in to Beth and complete the appropriate paperwork. Please call Beth at 304-342-7870 if you have any questions about medications at school.
  • If your child needs sunscreen at school, please provide it (labeled with the child's name). We must also have a completed sunscreen form on file for the child. The form may be accessed through ParentsWeb.
  • Until the Frontage Road/Triana Field project is complete, please continue to drop elementary children off in front of the school on 20th Street and drop Primary children off in the parking lot. All primary and elementary children will be dismissed to cars as they come through the parking lot during regular dismissal times. Children will not be dismissed to a car on 20th Street. Thank you for your patience - we've been told the end is in sight!
  • We are distributing car line signs during dismissal, but still have more to deliver. If your family does not have a sign, please ask a staff member at dismissal (car line or Plus). Thank you!

I look forward to seeing all of you at the Ice Cream Social this evening. Thank you for being part of our MMS family!

Best wishes,
Jennifer

FACULTY FOCUS

"The training of the teacher who is to help life is something far more than the learning of ideas. It includes the training of character; it is the preparation of the spirit." Maria Montessori

The beginning of a new year is a special time at MMS, as teachers come together to prepare their classrooms -- and themselves -- for service to the child. As part of this preparation, staff members participated in several experiential training programs in the past two weeks. These included a powerful two-day "Positive Discipline in the Classroom" seminar led by Morgan Metcalf of "Power of Positive Solutions." PD is a research-based approach that builds community, develops important life skills and supports academic growth in a way that is deeply respectful for both children and adults. Please watch for upcoming Positive Discipline education opportunities for parents!

Other back to school professional development programs included three days of curriculum alignment with Katie Ibes, our Montessori consultant, first aid training and an interactive workshop on the "Paideia Method" by Middle School Guide Sarah Halstead. Paideia is a philosophy of learning that shifts the focus from the teacher to student. With similarities to the Socratic discussion
a Paideia seminar, a hallmark of the Montessori adolescent program, is a collaborative intellectual dialogue facilitated by open ended questions about a text of topic to increase understanding of concepts and values.
MMS IN THE NEWS

Mountaineer Montessori has been making headlines since our founding in 1976. We continue to be a newsmaker with MMS programs, people and events generating several wonderful stories over the past few months. These include a Charleston Gazette-Mail front page feature on our 20th annual Tie Dye Day; a powerful op-ed, "The Day That Changed My Life" developed by Amal Faridi in a Middle School creative writing workshop; and a Vogue profile of the "funky world" of alumna Caroline Kaufman.

We encourage you to check out these and other great Montessori stories below and follow your school in the news on our website " In the News" page .
