Back in the hot life again. Implant surgery went well, and I was on store-bought Ibuprofen the next day for pain. I am safeguarding my Tylenol 3 with codeine for hiking 1st aid kit. I spent much time thinking about connections on the 2400-mile drive home. It amazes me that you get on a road in Michigan and, with a few exits and interchanges, arrive in Palm Springs. I find comfort in the roads that lead me to the people I love. I know that that family and friends are at the end of the roads leading north. I know the ones leading east take me to my in-laws, and other roads take me to places I love and want to immerse myself in. Still, distance creates a strange time warp. A place left in the morning seems a week away the next morning in a new destination. Those we love sleep in our hearts, waiting for the next visit, phone call, or email.
On the way home, we overnighted at Homolovi State Park in Arizona, and I hiked to one of the ruins at sunrise. There is a series of pueblos here, some of which have 2 to 3000 rooms. Pottery shards and cutting tools are scattered on the grounds. I touch a painted black and white shard and feel a faint connection back to the hands that created it and used it. We cannot envision each other's lives, but somehow, our hands touch across time for a moment. I feel wonder, I feel peace, I feel gratitude.
“People leave traces of themselves where they feel most comfortable, most worthwhile.” ― Haruki Murakami, Dance Dance Dance
Home on Wednesday, but not without a little drama. We blew a back tire just outside of Quartzsite and managed to limp into town on the dual tire still inflated, but we had to spend the night waiting for the correct tire to be sent. I always discover something delightfully weird in this town.
Quartzsite, Arizona, is a small town with a thing for camels. The town's welcome sign is adorned with camels; its graveyard is the final resting place for Hadji Ali, a camel herder for the U.S. military; and just off of the 10 freeway sits Georgette, a scrap metal camel with ties to a fascinating bit of folklore: Arizona's Red Ghost.
In the 1880s, stories spread throughout Arizona of a giant red horse with a devil on its back. The Red Ghost trampled a woman to death at one campground, tore through a second campground, and supposedly flipped over two freight wagons at a third. At the scene of each event were signs of the creature: enormous hoof marks larger than any horse, and strands of red hair.
Stories of the Red Ghost rampaging all over the territory lasted for a decade, until a farmer found it: a red camel grazing with the skeletal remains of a man strapped to its back. The camel was likely a straggler, released from Hadji Ali's team after the government abandoned the U.S. Camel Corps. The Red Ghost mystery was mostly solved, though no one knows who roped the corpse to the camel's back, or why.

Women’s History
Women, We Should Know -
Jaguarina, real name Ella Hattan, dressed in armor, and holding her broadsword and helmet. One of the greatest swordswomen of the Victorian era, Hattan defeated more than sixty men (half of them fencing masters) on foot and horseback, mostly with the broadsword. She was also proficient with the foil, rapier, dagger, Bowie knife, and in pugilism, having more than once having had fought off a male attacker in the street. She also carried scars on her body as a result of her many contests. She was one of the greatest female martial artists, who deserves to be remembered.
