Sept. 11, 2018
Happy National Arts in Education Week!
The second week of September was designated by Congress in 2010 as the week to celebrate and recognize the essential role the arts play in a complete and balanced education for all students. Like each of you, I have seen firsthand the impact that arts education has had on the lives of countless children, regardless of whether they chose to pursue a career in the arts as an adult.

Please share your story on social media this week using the hashtags #BecauseOfArtsEd and #ArtsEdWeek. Even after this week, keep sharing your story by using #theArtsMatter and #BecauseOfArtsEd and tagging me @P_CrooksVAPA and @ArtsEmpowerSD in your tweets.

You will also have the opportunity to share your story about the importance of arts education at our 2018 Arts Empower Mega Conference on Oct. 18 at Balboa Park. You can find details on the big event and other high-quality professional learning opportunities and resources on the SDCOE VAPA website.

As always, I look forward to invitations to visit your classroom or school to see the great learning taking place. I hope you’ll share this newsletter with your colleagues, especially any teachers who are new this school year, so they can join the conversation. Best wishes as you embark on the 2018-19 school year!

Share Love of Music as a Docent

A love of music is the main requirement for someone to become a decent with the Advocates for Classical Music (AFCM) program.

AFCM is a music docent program serving schools throughout San Diego County. During the most recent concert season, docents visited 134 schools to prepare more than 12,000 students for San Diego Symphony and Classics 4 Kids concerts by speaking to the upcoming events and providing CDs and books for classroom use.

The organization is looking to expand its program to be able to reach even more students. The docents meet three to four weeks prior to scheduled concerts to receive lesson plans and other materials for presenting at schools.

With the docent season about to start, please share this opportunity with others and contact Aveline Von Ehrenberg at 858-385-1909 or afcmdocents@aol.com if you are interested.
If you have any questions or comments about Arts in Action , plea se contact Pauline Crooks .
