A Word from the Pastor

August 26, 2022

It is a pleasure for me to introduce our new Associate Pastor: Rev. Azam Vianney Mansha, CJM. He begins his ministry with us on September 1. Fr. Azam was born in 1985 in Karachi, Pakistan. He has four brothers and a sister; he is in the middle.

I came to know him when he entered the Eudist formation program in the Philippines. I was his director of formation there as well as assisting him when he was working on his Licentiate in Sacred Theology with a specialization in Biblical Theology at Loyola School of Theology in Manila. His thesis was entitled: “The Mother of Jesus,” “His Mother,” and “The Woman” : An Attempt to Understand Johannine Mariology (I was his thesis editor.)

Fr. Azam was ordained a priest in the Philippines (in the midst of the pandemic) on February 8, 2021. He spent his first year as a priest there while serving at the Eudist retreat house near Manila.

I think you will find him to be an outgoing person, always eager to help wherever he can. You will get to know him quickly. He enjoys teaching, preaching and cooking. One of these days we will ask him to make some Pakistani food for us.

He has written many articles, especially in the areas of biblical theology and Mariology (the study of Mary). I am sure that you will learn a lot from him and be touched by his compassion and care for people of all ages.

St. Patrick’s is his first full-time parish assignment. We have an opportunity to benefit from his zeal and enthusiasm. We also have the opportunity to help in the ongoing formation of this dedicated newly ordained priest.

We welcome Fr. Azam to St. Patrick Parish and assure him of our prayers for him as well as our collaboration in the work of the Gospel.

In one Heart,

Fr. Ron

You Have Done Great Things

Here is another uplifting virtual choir video from David Wesley. 142 singers and signers from 34 countries bring this hopeful and energetic worship song to life. Our great God and Savior is doing great things for us, in us and through us for His glory!

Congratulations, Cardinal

Robert

McElroy!

Outreach with Synod Survey

As a part of the Synod process, our Diocese continues to seek the feedback of as many people as possible. That is why Cardinal designate McElroy is encouraging that each and everyone of us participate in a survey that will further assist the church in better ministering at all levels. All those who receive our parish email newsletter will receive the survey sent directly to them in early September.

But we want to reach out beyond those who are coming to church and active in the parish. We want to hear from those members who have distanced themselves from the Catholic Church or perhaps left the Catholic faith completely. Their voices matter to us!

We invite you to help in this effort. Please use the following QR code to personally invite someone who may not otherwise know of this opportunity to take the survey. A paper with the QR code can also be found in the pews of the church during the month of September. They are also available in the parish office. Take as many as you like. Let’s be proactive and invite family members, friends or neighbors to share their input.

The survey will be open online for 30 days beginning September 6. We look forward to hearing from you!

Gospel Reading

Luke 14:1,7-14

When you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind.

Background on the Gospel Reading

Meals played an important role in the society in which Jesus lived. More than a time for sharing nourishment, they were a time to share ideas and to model different aspects of social relationships. In Luke's Gospel, the places that a person ate (at the home of a tax collector, 5:29), the people with whom a person ate (sinners, 5:30), whether a person washed before eating (11:38), and, as is the case here, the place that a person sits while eating are all important. The narrator says Jesus tells a parable, but it is really wise advice to both guests and hosts about finding true happiness at the heavenly banquet.

Jesus warns guests to wait before taking their places at the table lest they be asked to move if someone more important arrives. This is more than just a lesson about dinner etiquette. It is advice on how to find your true place in the Kingdom of God. Jesus advises hosts not to invite people who would be expected to repay them to dinner but to invite those who could not repay: the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. This is where real blessings can be found.

In these sayings, Luke gives us not only advice on how to approach the end times but also on how to live according to Jesus' vision of a good society. Luke's Gospel also advises us how the Church must be part of bringing about this society. It is yet another example in Luke's Gospel of the reversal the kingdom brings about.
