Pastor’s Notes –

23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Fr. George G. Pérez, CJM

Hello and blessings to you all,

This is my first time writing Pastor’s Notes for St. Patrick Catholic Community—or for any parish, come to think of it! My name is Fr. George G. Pérez, CJM, and I am both honored and humbled to begin my ministry among you as your new pastor. I must admit, being named pastor has taken me a bit by surprise, but I embrace this calling with gratitude and trust in God’s providence.

I would like to take a moment to thank Fr. Ron for his many years of dedicated service as pastor here at St. Patrick. I am grateful that I will have the opportunity to work alongside him during this transition. Over the past few weeks, he has been gently preparing the community for my arrival, and I appreciate his thoughtful care.

This weekend marks my first Sunday as your pastor, and I’m deeply moved to begin this journey with you. I also want to acknowledge the departure of Fr. Azam—I know his presence will be missed. But rest assured, he is taking my place at St. James-St. Leo Catholic Community, where I’ve served in various roles since 2011. He is in good hands, and I’m certain they will keep him well fed—both spiritually and physically!

Providentially, the readings for this Sunday speak powerfully to both the challenges and the blessings of beginning anew in ministry. The Book of Wisdom reminds us that we need God’s guidance to discern His will. Paul’s letter to Philemon shows us how love can transform relationships and challenge social expectations. And in the Gospel, Jesus invites us to follow Him with complete trust, even when it means letting go of comfort, security, or personal plans.

True discipleship, as we hear today, requires wisdom, love, and sacrifice. It’s not easy. It means surrendering control, embracing change, and carrying our daily crosses. But through the grace of the Holy Spirit, we can walk this path together—with faith, hope, and joy—knowing that the cost of discipleship leads to the fullness of life in Christ.

As I begin this new chapter with you, I invite you to join me in this reflection:

What is one area of your life where you may be holding back from fully following Christ—perhaps a relationship, a habit, or a fear?

Ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom and courage. Offer it to the Lord in prayer this week and take one small but concrete step closer to Him.

I look forward to walking this journey of faith with you. Please pray for me and know that I will be praying for you.

With gratitude and peace in Christ,

Fr. George G. Pérez, CJM

Be Careful

If you see a woman and two children on our property begging for money (usually on Sunday morning), do not give them anything. It is a scam. The woman doesn’t get to keep the money that she is given. Her “boss” takes most of it from her.

The best way to help those who are truly in need is to donate money to our parish food bank, the soup supper, or Showers of Blessings. Certainly, Catholic Charities also makes sure that everything you contribute gets to those who need it.

With so many needy people, we don’t want to contribute to a scam.

Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) Begins Next Sunday

The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) is the process through which people become fully initiated into the Catholic community. This includes:

  • Adults who have never been baptized
  • Adults who were baptized in another Christian religion but now want to join the Catholic Church
  • Adults who were baptized as Catholics but never received the Sacrament of Confirmation (OCIA is not for adolescents; adults only)

Our program meets on Sunday mornings after the 9:00 am Mass. It is held in the parish center from 10:00 to 11:00 am. Except for a few holiday weekends, it meets every Sunday. The first session will be next Sunday, September 14, 2025.

Regular attendance is important. Those who complete the process will receive the sacraments at the Easter Vigil (April 4, 2026).

To get enrolled, you need to make an appointment with Fr. Ron. Email him at rmbagley@yahoo.com

Bible Study on Apocalypse

in the Bible

Fr. Ron Bagley will teach a course on Apocalyptic Literature this fall. Come and explore the deeper meaning of the strange and puzzling form of writing in the Bible.

The course includes an exploration of the apocalyptic writing of the Old and New Testaments, its literary genre and the historical contexts of its use in God’s Word. After a brief overview of apocalyptic writing in general in the Bible, this course will focus primarily on the Book of Revelation, examining its meaning at the time it was written and its relevance today.

Second Reading

Philemon 9-10, 12-17

Paul encourages one of his converts to consider his former slave a brother in Christ Jesus.

Gospel Reading

Luke 14:25-33

Jesus teaches about the demands of discipleship.

Background on the Gospel Reading

In chapter 14 of Luke's Gospel, Jesus is speaking to people gathered at the table about the difficulties of following him. This group of people is suspicious about Jesus, looking to catch him doing something wrong. Jesus speaks to them in parables, emphasizing that although there is a right way to be a disciple and enter into the kingdom of his Father, it is a difficult path to follow. Many, even some of the guests at the table, reject the invitation.

So Jesus turns to the crowds and speaks to them of discipleship. Jesus explains that, when it comes to making a choice for the Kingdom of God, nothing can get in the way. When Jesus describes “hating” one's father and mother, he is not talking about feelings. Rather, he is emphasizing very strongly that choosing to be a disciple means that everything else—family, money, your own life—must come second. In Matthew's version of this story (Matthew 10:37), Jesus refers not to “hating” father or mother, but to loving them more than Jesus. Jesus makes it very clear that being a disciple is not easy. It means to bear one's own cross.

These difficult sayings of Jesus are followed by two brief parables (a person constructing a tower and a king marching into battle) that make an obvious point—don't start what you cannot finish. Discipleship is difficult and is something we can commit to only if we are prepared to put the Kingdom of God before everything else.

Family Mass

The next Family Mass will be on September 14 at 9:00 am. Come and bring the whole family.

Our Youth Traveled to Ghana

Four of our youth leaders who are on the National Youth Advisor Council (NYAC) had a once-in-a-lifetime experience as they travelled to Ghana to have an exposure to the many works the Catholic Church sponsors in that country through Catholic Relief Services. They were Valeria Torres, Tim Rivette, Hector Saldana, and Natalie Myers. Also on the trip was Natalie Ibarra who grew up in this parish and now works for the National Federation of Catholic Youth Ministry.

Soon we will give the parish community an opportunity to hear about the tremendous impact this pilgrimage had on our young people. You can read about their experience using the link below.
