Mark Your Calendar!!

The 3rd Annual Homeowner Appreciation Event will be held on Thursday, October 20, starting at 6:30 p.m. Click here to RSVP for you and your family. Join COCLT as we celebrate our homeowners with fall festivities galore.

There will be goodie bags for all kids 17 and under. Activities and games for kids and kids-at-heart. Tasty food and drawings for amazing prizes. But wait...there is more. Every household that registers and attends will receive a special thank you gift.

If all of that did not get you to click and register, there is more still. We are excited to announce that COCLT is collaborating with the Columbus Foundation to offer a free tree planting project. Every COCLT household is eligible for a free tree planting, complete with annual check-ins over the next four years. Several tree species will be available to choose from. Trees can add value to your home, provide shade to cool your home, break the cold winds to lower your heating costs, and provide food for wildlife. They also look pretty. More information will be available at the event.

Additionally, we would like to invite all homeowners to throw in their hat for the chance to be picked as the 2023 representative on the COCLT Advisory Committee. Email Norman Deena if you are interested or want to learn more.

Register and attend (you must be present to win prizes and receive the special thank you gift) to connect with COCLT staff and other COCLT homeowners. Deadline to register is October 16th.

Homeowner Tips

What Comes Down Must be Cleaned Out

Gutters are not exciting, but they serve the vital purpose of diverting rain through downspouts away from the home’s foundation. They prevent water from leaking through windows or seeping into a basement or crawlspace. Gutters that are filled with leaves can lead to clogged downspouts. Winter’s melt and freeze cycles can then cause snow on the roof to melt into the gutter and freeze, causing them to detach from the roof.

There are various cleaning methods/tools that can be used. Garden hose, wet/dry vacuum, leaf blower, power washer, or by hand. Most of the necessary tools and ladders (well, not hands because that would be gross - and illegal) are available through Mod-Con’s Living Tool Library, which was highlighted in the July newsletter.

If heights and ladders make you nervous, you may want to consider hiring a professional to clean your gutters.

Goodbye for Now, My Friend

One bonus of winter in Ohio is the break from lawn mowing. But what to do with your mower? Electric mowers are much more compact than the gas versions making for much easier storage. However, you still want to maintain a clean, safe environment for storage.

Whether you store it in the garage, basement, or a closet, make sure you put it away clean. If you fail to clean your mower before storage, you could find rust or other damage from caked on debris.

If you store your mower upright, keep any exposed blade up against the wall or covered to prevent anyone from getting cut.

Store the battery where it will not freeze. Do NOT keep the charger plugged in over the winter. Begin charging again in the spring.

Remember to always check for loose parts, as well as inspect the wheels. Adjustment may be needed.

The Ups

and Downs

Using less water to wash a load of laundry might be enough of a draw to a front-load washer. Before you commit, consider...

Wash times range from 70-120 minutes making front-load washers the slowest type of washer on the market. However, that time can be made up with shorter dry times because they spin faster, extracting more water. The faster drum can cause more vibrations, which is not typically a problem on a concrete floor but can be on a wood-framed floor.

They can run 2 inches wider than the standard 27 inches, and height and depth vary by as much as 8 inches. Be sure to measure your space to ensure a proper fit.

Mold can develop in various parts of the washer, including in the dispensers and the rubber gasket around the opening. Front-load washers require more care and attention.

Take the time to research all costly purchases for your home.

Community Resource Highlight

Habitat ReStore are independently owned reuse stores operated by local Habitat for Humanity organizations. ReStores accept donations and sell a constantly changing inventory of diverse, high-quality merchandise to the public at a fraction of the retail price, while diverting reusable household items and building materials from area landfills. They divert more than 1,700 tons of durable materials from the local landfill, every year. Basically, they are an environmentally conscience discount home improvement store.
