Pearls have been witnessing a revival for some time—from being sophisticated to now streamlined modernity. They are no longer characterized for being prim, preppy or proper but, instead, they are whatever you want them to be and however you want to wear them. Designers feature a range of styles that offer a plethora of pearl looks. The trend is sure to cast a wider net after 2023 MET Gala’s celebrities clad in pearls honored Karl Lagerfeld. Karl's role as designer for Chanel brought on Coco’s favorite costume and fine jewelry looks—pearls in every type, shape, size and configuration. Pearls keep showing up on the red carpet and that will propel them to continue to be a major trend as we head in 2024.

Natural pearls form around a microscopic irritant in the bodies of certain mollusks. Cultured pearls are the result of the deliberate insertion of a bead or piece of tissue that the mollusk coats with nacre.

Pearls are treasures from the Earth’s ponds, lakes, seas, and oceans, and they’ve always embodied the mystery, power, and life-sustaining nature of water.

Elizabeth Taylor’s La Peregrina Pearl

La Peregrina, also known as “The Wanderer” is one of the most famous natural pearls in the world. The pearl has a long and storied history and has travelled across the world beginning in 1582 and back again, finally coming to its new home in America.

Richard Burton purchased this marvel for his wife, Elizabeth Taylor as a Valentine’s Day gift in 1969 for the jaw-droppingly low price of $37,000. The same pearl sold at auction $11 million in 2011 after her death. The large, natural drop-shaped pearl measures 17.35 – 17.90 x 25.50mm and is very heavy. Consequently, Taylor had the pearl’s setting redesigned by famous jewelry house Cartier.
