TRAINING TIPS FOR BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL
BASEBALL TIP:

The pitching tips this week focus on improving control. Good control is essential to a pitcher's success.

There are  a number of things pitchers can do to improve accuracy. I usually start with mechanics...

Here are two quick tips to get you started, followed by more at the link below...

  1. Does the pitcher have good posture and balance? The pitcher should keep his chin over his belt with an erect trunk. Proper posture is important for accuracy.
  2. Is the pitcher tall and fully loaded over his back leg before moving toward landing, or is his back leg collapsing? Pitchers who throw on a downward angle are often able to spot the ball better.

Key takeaway: Remember, accuracy starts with mechanics. To achieve a 65% strike percentage, consistency is key.

SOFTBALL TIP:

Some of the common characteristics of very good hitters, especially power hitters are most often overlooked by coaches & players. Everyone knows you need good base, good timing, & good strength. But these “other” traits must be developed and thus practiced.

As a hitter looking to improve these "other" traits, here is what you should be focused on this off-season:

#1— Good Eyes: It is essential to be able to focus the eyes on exactly the point the need to be in order to become a great hitter. Eye Training is the key to developing as a hitter. When possible, use tennis balls, small whiffles, etc… to train the eyes on a smaller target.

#2— Good Hands: Hands are a very important part of the power swing. You must “throw” your top hand at the point of impact and control/balance your bat control with bottom hand. Various drills are available to help develop good hands.

#3— Feel Your Swing: The ability to “feel” your swing is what sets apart good hitters from great hitters. Repetition is the only way to develop a great swing & then having the focus/concentration to “feel” the proper swing will make any player a better hitter. When you can physically feel abnormalities in your Base, Strength, Form, Hands, you will automatically know exactly what needs to be fixed to better your next swing.
