Welcome Message from the OISS Director

Dear international scholars,

On behalf of the staff at the Office for International Students and Scholars (OISS), let me welcome you to fall semester 2014.  The University of Delaware deeply values the presence of international students and scholars on campus and it is a privilege for our staff to assist you.  Here are some reminders as we start the academic year:

  • OISS Communications:  We recommend that you regularly check your UD email and periodically check the OISS web site. OISS will be keeping you informed of important information about immigration and other issues.  We do not want you to miss any critical new information.

  • New J-1 Scholar Orientation:  This orientation provides scholars with important information about maintaining their immigration status in the U.S. and as well as resources for settling into the local community.  All new and continuing J-1 scholars and their dependents are welcome to attend. Scholars should only attend the orientation if they have not done so already. Please check the OISS Events Calendar for more information on times and location: www.udel.edu/oiss/about/event

  • Your DS-2019:  Always make sure that your DS-2019 Form is current and valid. If your document will expire in the near future and you plan to continue your program beyond the end date, please extend it before the expiration date. Your immigration status could be at risk if you do not extend your document before it expires. To download the DS-2019 Visiting Scholar Extension Request Form, please see: www.udel.edu/oiss/resources/forms

  • Changes in Visa Status:  You are required to contact OISS prior to applying for any changes in visa status, transfers or permanent residency. Changes of status cases can take several months to process.  Please make sure that you speak to an OISS advisor well in advance of any anticipated changes.

  • Updating your U.S. Address: Please make sure that you always have an updated local U.S. address in with OISS.  Please send an email to oiss@udel.edu with your new U.S. address. It is your responsibility to update your information within 10 days of the change.

  • Travel Signature:  Are you planning a trip outside of the U.S.?  Please contact OISS to make sure that all your documents are in order and that you have the necessary signatures before you travel. You can read more about travel and re-entry at: www.udel.edu/oiss/students/travel_and_visas

  • International Programming:  A calendar of events for international students and scholars is available on the OISS website.  Please visit www.udel.edu/oiss/about/events for  more information on activities, sessions, and workshops happening this fall.

  • Weekly Coffee Hour: OISS will be hosting this fun weekly social event again this semester over coffee, tea, snacks, live music and great conversation. Meet up with other new and returning students and scholars, learn about new traditions, and learn about different cultures from around the world. Coffee hour kicks off this Friday, September 12 at 4 PM and will feature live music  by our favorite local band, Eclectic Acoustic!  www.udel.edu/oiss/coffee

  • Get Connected: You can now follow OISS on social media for immediate updates on programming events and activities designed to help you succeed and adjust to life at UD! Check out our social media page: www.udel.edu/oiss/about/socialmedia

I invite you to contact OISS at any time we might be of assistance.  Best wishes for a successful semester ahead.
