What’s Up in August – A Message from the Wardens

Dear St. Luke’s Family,

Here we are at yet another turning point! We have celebrated Fr. Jarrett’s time with us,

said our farewells, and now, turn our attention to September. As we await Fr. John’s

arrival, we look forward to welcoming some new faces to our altar to preside over our

worship, preach the Gospel, and gather us in prayer. The response to our call for supply

clergy (outlined below) has been heartening, promising us a variety of voices to guide

us throughout the month. Continue to check our newsletters each week for a brief

biography and picture of each officiant.

August 3 – Fr. Anthony C. Dinoto presiding & preaching (see bio and picture later in this issue); Pastor Jonathon Malone assisting

August 10 – The Rev. David A. Boyd presiding and preaching

August 17 – The Rev. Dr. Maggi Dawn presiding; Pastor Jonathan Malone preaching

August 24 – The Rev. Catherine Boyd presiding and preaching

August 31 (one service only at 9am) – The Rev. Virginia Buckles presiding and preaching

As for pastoral care needs, Pastor Malone is on call throughout August as his schedule

allows. He and the Pastoral Care Committee will work together to meet your needs.

Please contact the Parish Office or the Wardens to assure your concerns are

appropriately served. As always, your vestry is available to you for comments, ideas, or

discussion regarding other items and generally what’s up at St. Luke’s.

Our new rector, Fr. John Fountain, will be at the altar on September 7, when we enter

this last stage of our transition. In preparation, our Adult Faith Formation team has come

up with a wonderful project to allow us to reflect on who we are and what we love about

St. Luke’s. The Grapevine of Gratitude is described in a separate announcement later in

this newsletter, and we invite you to join us in lifting up the breadth and fullness of

talents, gifts, and blessings we enjoy as a community.

In the next few weeks, Fr. John and his family will be moving to Rhode Island. Our

Transition Team: Deb Lukens, Dale Stretz, Neal McNamara, and Victoria Strang, has

been busy preparing a welcome treat for the family and working on ideas to introduce

them to the St. Luke’s community. Primarily, the family needs to settle in, so we ask for

your prayers for them as they acclimate to Rhode Island, their East Greenwich

neighborhood, and Rhode Island ‘speak’!

In closing, we want to thank our beloved Transition Prayer Team: Nance Arnold, Paul

Brooks, Joseph Gomes, Katie Gressle, Judy Horton, Stephanie Leite, and Victoria

Strang. Since February 2024, they have met to create prayers for each phase of this

rector transition journey, and we have thrived on the messages conveyed. Joy and

possibility inspired our stewardship campaign, trust in God’s perfect provision guided

our search process, and the call to welcome change with grace will be our standard as

we lift this final prayer over the coming weeks…

Gracious God, we are grateful to you for guiding us through our search

process and give thanks for our Vestry and Search Team whose faith-filled

work led us to our new rector.

We are excited to welcome Fr. John and his family into our church

community and ask for your continued blessing through this next phase of

transition.

Open our hearts to welcome change with grace. We stand together in

hope as we anticipate the future with joy and possibility.

All this we ask, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen

Yours in Christ,

Deborah & Shareen

Father Anthony C. Dinoto, M.Div

A native of Stonington, Connecticut, Father Anthony C. Dinoto is a priest of the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut. In June 2023 he retired as Rector of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Niantic, CT, after 10 years. This past January, Fr. Dinoto completed an 18-month tenure as Interim Rector of Christ Church, Westerly, RI.

He was awarded his Master of Divinity degree from the General Theological Seminary, New York City. He was ordained to the priesthood at Christ Episcopal Church, Greenwich, CT, and served in parish ministry there and as Rector or Interim Rector in Danielson, Guilford, Durham, and Niantic, CT.

Father Dinoto and the former Susan S. Payne were married at the Watch Hill Chapel in 1977 and reside in Ledyard, CT, in a 300-year-old farmhouse. They are the parents of three daughters and a granddaughter. For many years, before back pain, he was an avid golfer, having accomplished four holes-in-one! He is a serious collector of antique lead toy soldiers. Prior to ordained ministry, Father Tony had a long career as a Licensed Funeral Director in Mystic, CT, where the family continues to own The Dinoto Funeral Home.

A Grapevine of Gratitude

Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches… You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another.

John 15:4-5, 16-17

Starting on Sunday, August 3, you will have a chance to share your news of God’s good work at St Luke’s!

In the atrium you will find our St. Luke’s Grapevine of Gratitude. Each of us has a unique view of the good things that are happening at St. Luke's. Please share yours! Take a paper leaf or grapes and write something that members of St. Luke’s are doing or have done that expresses the good news of Christ to you, then hang it on the vine for others to celebrate too!

By the notes on the leaves and grapes, we can express our gratitude for the many good gifts - both large and small - that are shared through our St. Luke’s community.

For example,

The joy-filled Vacation Bible School this summer!

The Loaves and Fishes monthly run to Woonsocket.

The Altar Guild’s prayerful care for our worship space.

Help us to fill the grapevine with our thankfulness for the good news of Christ that we share and experience at St. Luke’s!

Thank you!

Take Action

Loaves & Fishes

Loaves and fishes is a food ministry partnering with other local churches. The third Saturday of each month, St. Luke’s provides hamburgers, etc. to people in Woonsocket. Each person walks away with a bag lunch, hot food and certain types of clothing may be available to them. The July run was successful with many new faces and people from a broad age perspective including young children. People were most appreciative that we were there and showing our commitment to them. The next run is on August 16th and we will continue to need lighter weight clothing, shorts and short sleeve tee shirts for men and women, either new or gently used, and white socks. For August we will maintain the bag count at 120 with 20 bags going to the Hotel in East Greenwich. It is appreciated if all donations of food and clothing can be in the St Luke’s kitchen by 10:00 AM on August 16, 2025. Here is the link:

In signing up, there is no expectation that one person needs to fulfill the total amount of a particular item. When using the SignUp Genius, please indicate how many of an item you will be donating.

We understand that there may be circumstances that change and you cannot participate despite initially committing to do so. In these cases we would appreciate your removing your name from the SignUp Genius.

If you are not receiving the SignUp Genius in your e-mail and would like to do so, please send an e-mail to: saintslukesfeedingministry@gmail.com.

Your generosity is most appreciated. It allows St Luke’s to continue helping those in need.

DORCAS

Dorcas International Institute of RI is a refugee resettlement agency whose mission is to help newcomers to RI. Last year, over 334 individuals from 21 different countries were resettled!

When they arrive, they are met at TF Green by a Dorcas case worker. They are provided with options for legal, education, employment services and other tools to help them begin the process of becoming independent.

St. Luke's partners with Dorcas in a variety of ways. Currently, we are helping with a need for adult underwear and socks.

Please help us by dropping off donations of new adult underwear and white socks in the Dorcas bin in the atrium. If you’d like to learn more about the Dorcas/St. Luke's partnership, please email me, I’d love to hear from you.
