Cal State LA welcomes President Berenecea Johnson Eanes to the Golden Eagle family. President Eanes is the first woman to lead our University. With the start of her tenure as the ninth president, Cal State LA enters a new era. Read her message sent on Jan. 8 to the University community.

Thanks to the generosity of the campus community

Cal State LA students, faculty, and staff donated more than $3,698 worth of toys and food during the University’s Toy Donation Drive and Cal State LA Canned Food Drive. More than 600 cans of food were collected and delivered to nearly 100 low-income families in partnership with the nonprofit United American Indian Involvement, Inc. More than 250 new and unused toys were collected and delivered to 103 children in collaboration with Para Los Niños, a nonprofit organization that serves needy children and families in Los Angeles. The Center for Engagement, Service, and the Public Good thanks the Cal State LA community for its generous contributions. Special thanks go to the Center for Student Involvement, Cal State LA Federal Credit Union, and St. Thomas More School for their donations and support.

Luckman presents a concert featuring Chaka Khan

Commemorating her 50th anniversary in music, Chaka Khan will perform on Saturday, Jan. 27, at 8 p.m., in the Luckman Theatre. The legendary Chaka Khan‘s iconic voice and musical style have defined pop, soul, jazz, and funk since she rose to stardom soon after launching her career. Cal State LA faculty and staff can purchase discounted tickets at the Luckman Box Office upon presentation of a valid Cal State LA One Card. For ticket information, call 323-343-6600.

Black History Month at Cal State LA

Join us for a month of “Resurgence and Renewal” as we celebrate local artists, Black-owned businesses, cultural identity, and the courageous efforts of students, staff, faculty, and alumni. The Pan-African Studies Department, the Alumni Association, the Division of Student Life, and more have joined together to deliver a February full of fun, art, wellness, and important conversations. Income tax filing services offered by Cal State LA VITA

The College of Business and Economics' Department of Accounting, in partnership with the Internal Revenue Service, is offering Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) to low- and moderate-income individuals. Free tax preparation services will be offered at Cal State LA, the Cypress Park Branch Library, the Lincoln Heights Regional Library, the El Sereno Branch Library, the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library, and at Young & Healthy, a Pasadena-based nonprofit organization. To make an appointment for Young & Healthy, call 626-795-5166. To make an appointment for any of the other sites or to get more information, visit the Cal State LA VITA website. The free VITA program will run each Saturday from Jan. 27 through April 13.

Silverman Gallery exhibit features a range of contemporary ceramics 

The Ronald H. Silverman Fine Arts Gallery at Cal State LA presents a ceramic exhibition titled “Earth and Ember,” on display through Feb. 22. The exhibit features works by ceramic artists, including internationally renowned artists who contributed to ceramic education and graduates of Cal State LA, dating from the late 1980s to the present. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, from noon to 5 p.m. A reception will be held on Saturday, Feb. 3, from 2 to 5 p.m. For more information, call 323-343-4040.

Dreamers Resource Center offers virtual UndocuAlly training

The Erika J. Glazer Family Dreamers Resource Center is offering a virtual training workshop that will prepare faculty and staff to be allies for undocumented students. Register online for the training on Thursday, Feb. 29, from 3 to 4 p.m. To sign up, complete the UndocuAlly training registration form.

In Memoriam

Anthony Fratiello, emeritus professor of chemistry in the College of Natural and Social Sciences, passed away on Nov. 9, 2023. Fratiello joined the Cal State LA faculty in 1963 and was recognized for his contributions to advancing faculty-mentored student research. He was a pioneer in magnetic resonance techniques, and co-founder of the Minority Opportunities in Research (MORE) programs. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully asks for gifts to the Anthony Fratiello Endowed Scholarship. A memorial service will be announced later. Read more about the late professor.

The fall edition of University Reports is available online. Browse through the publication that showcases professional activities and published works, as well as awards received by our faculty and staff. Submit your information to the Office of Communications and Public Affairs for inclusion in the next issue.

Give blood at upcoming American Red Cross blood drives

Students, faculty, staff, and community members can give blood on campus during upcoming American Red Cross blood drives on Feb. 1 and Feb. 15. Learn more about the blood drives.
