Welcome to New Students

ESF welcomed its incoming undergraduate class for Fall 2024, with first-year enrollment up about 7.5% and transfer student enrollment up nearly 10% over the previous year. 

Among the new transfer students, 35 are attending ESF’s Ranger School in Wanakena, N.Y., enrolled in one of three associate in applied science programs. The Graduate School at ESF welcomed approximately 130 new students who are pursuing their master’s and doctoral degrees.

ESF Receives $745K EPA Grant

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded ESF nearly three-quarters of a million dollars ($745,748) to support the creation of tools and guidelines to drive the use of salvaged and recovered building materials for more sustainable construction practices.

Dr. Mohammad Uzzal Hossain, assistant professor in ESF’s Department of Sustainable Resources Management, will lead the team in developing easy-to-use templates and a detailed inventory to help builders understand the environmental benefits of using salvaged materials.

ESF Senior Transforms Visits at Clark Reservation

This summer, visitors to Clark Reservation State Park did more than hike or birdwatch. Thanks to ESF senior Gillian Glessman, people also enjoyed sensory hikes, mindfulness sessions, and even historical reenactments.

Moon Library Re-Orientation Program

There are still two more opportunities to attend Moon Library's 2024 Re-Orientation Program! This is for new and returning graduate students and faculty to become reoriented to the library and its services. Sessions are in-person and virtual on Teams.

The program covers five topic areas:

• Instruction |The pedagogy of Critical Information Literacy and practice of information literacy.

• Research | How to use tools such as Experts at ESF and PivotRP; gain insight into Read and Publish and SUNY OA discounts.
• College Community | The story of ESF through the library's archives and special collections.

Register for the Dale L. Travis Lecture Series

Dr. Jonathan Cohen, professor and graduate director in the Department of Environmental Biology, will share the inspiring story of remarkable efforts to save a tiny bird at the 2024 Dale L. Travis Lecture Series.

The entire campus invited to attend his lecture Flight to Recovery: Protecting the Piping Plover.

Wednesday, Sept. 18 | 7 p.m. | Gateway Center

The piping plover — a shorebird unique to the eastern U.S. coast — relies entirely on beaches along the Atlantic Ocean and Great Lakes for every aspect of its daily needs.

These same beaches where plovers raise their chicks are popular recreation spots for humans. Disturbance, increased predators, and land development contributed to the bird being categorized as threatened on the Atlantic Coast and endangered in the Great Lakes.

But decades of scientific dedication to conserving the plover are aiding in its recovery and ensuring the preservation of its significant role in our natural heritage.
