Nilas Martins, born in Copenhagen, received his early dance training at the Royal Danish Ballet School. In 1984, he moved to New York and enrolled at the School of American Ballet. Two years later, he became a member of New York City Ballet where he was promoted to principal in 1993. He performed as a principal dancer until 2010.

Mr. Martins' association with Westside goes back to 2016 when he staged August Bournonville's 'Napoli' for Westside Ballet. He has served as an instructor at numerous esteemed institutions including Harvard University, School of American Ballet, Miami City Ballet School, New York City Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet and more. He has also travelled the world as a repetiture for the George Balanchine Trust since 1996.

Trained in the classical Bournonville technique and neoclassical style of Balanchine, Mr. Martins is a uniquely hybrid dancer who provides an exceptional artistic approach and technical perspective to his classes.

Mr. Martins begins teaching on Monday, November 8:

Mon/Tues/Thurs at 11:30am and Mon/Tues at 1:30pm.
