Welcome October⠀
Welcome October with its glorious browns, reds, oranges, golds tinged with green, warm days and cool nights, with thoughts of holidays to come. We have a great October chile recipe for you!

It's time to go on a "little things" walk, a hunt for acorns, twigs, berries, pine cones and seed pods.

Hare are some "how to" links:
Think of the heroes and heroines in the fictional world who have challenged, inspired, amused, comforted and taught you through the years. Then think about real world good people in your family, neighborhood, school, workplace and beyond. A favorite from the fictional world is Anne of Green Gables for she is thoroughly engaging as she gallops passionately, dramatically, through childhood, making mistakes, experiencing consequences, learning from them, fixing them. At the same time she had loving guidance from her adoptive parents --brother and sister, Matthew and Marilla-- who also made mistakes and learned from them. That's all of us, doing our best, getting it right, making mistakes, fixing things and carrying on!

Most importantly, I am so glad to see schools opening their doors to children and teachers, to see homeschoolers finding friends in pods and at the re-opened parks and to see families visiting with best friends.

Suki has summed up the best way to educate children with one word. Follow her advice and you will have children eager to learn!

Enjoy the weekend with your own heroines and heroes, Parmalee

The Room of Ancient Keys
My grandmother once gave me a tip:

In difficult times, you move forward in small steps.
Do what you have to do, but little by little.
Don't think about the future, or what may happen tomorrow.
Wash the dishes. Remove the dust.
Write a letter. Make a soup.
You see?
You are advancing step by step.
Take a step and stop. Rest a little. Praise yourself. Take another step. Then another.
You won't notice, but your steps will grow more and more.
And the time will come when you can think about the future without crying.

October Chile

Do you dare try this!?
This chile recipe comes from Sarah Leah Chases' New England Open House Cookbook. It is truly unique, with a surprise ingredient, unlike our traditional Texas chile, yet familiar, comforting, delicious and satisfying. It welcomes any and all of your favorite toppings.
Suki: What is “learning through success”?
All of my teaching is informed by my most difficult parenting task. One of my children had undefined “developmental issues”—with an emphasis on undefined. No one could tell us why it was happening or how to help him.

Without a diagnosis, I started to research techniques used for students with various special needs. That’s where I happened upon the concept of “learning through success,” which upended my ideas of what education is for and how it works. Read more>>>
