Cold Weather and Arthritis in Dogs
As people with arthritis know, joints feel stiffer and ache more in cold weather. The same is true for dogs, especially older and larger dogs.
Cold, damp weather can increase the effects of arthritis making it more difficult because most are less likely to be outside moving around this time of year.
Signs to look for if you think your dog has arthritis.
- Slow to get up
- Painful joints
- Panting more than usual
- Restless, up and down a lot
- Difficulty with stairs
- Limping
- Licking, chewing, biting sore areas
Treatment options
Surgical and non-surgical options are available for managing arthritis. Because surgery is usually a last resort, there are several important non-surgical treatments to consider.
- Natural supplements (fish oil, glucosamine, chondroitin, to name a few.)
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs)
- Dietary modification
- Cold laser treatments
Before using a supplement or non-surgical treatment, it's important to bring your dog in for a physical and blood work. We can determine if your pet's system will handle certain supplements and medications, and create a treatment plan specifically for your dog.
Cold laser therapy is also a good option that we can administer as part of their treatment plan. For more information on cold laser therapy visit our
website.

Welcome
Dr. Melissa Joseph Miller
Following graduation, first in her veterinary class, from Auburn University, Dr. Miller practiced small animal medicine and surgery in Montgomery, Alabama, before returning to Auburn where she practiced as a clinician in the Wilford & Kate Bailey Small Animal Teaching Hospital Community Practice service. Although she loved her time living in the loveliest village on the plains, she decided to move "home' to Birmingham where she grew up to practice for the past three years.
Dr. Miller is married to David Miller, and together they have a two year old daughter, Sadie, and two mischievous beagles, Bartlet and Anna.
Her professional interests include client education and communication, dermatology, ultrasound, and ophthalmology.
In her spare time, Dr. Miller enjoys cooking, Auburn football, traveling, and spending time with friends and family. She is so excited to be a part of the outstanding staff at Altadena Valley Animal Clinic.
