SMALL business, BIG voice |
The Aiken Chamber and a delegation of Aiken small business owners will travel to the South Carolina State House in Columbia April 30 to unite with small businesses from across the Palmetto State for Small Business Day at the State House, an advocacy day organized by the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce focused on ensuring S.C. SMALL businesses are heard BIG by state leaders.
The event will include the presentation of House and Senate Resolutions and a proclamation signing by Governor Henry McMaster.
The group from Aiken will also meet with the members of the Aiken County Legislative Delegation – Senators Young, Massey and Setzler; Representatives Blackwell, Clyburn, Hixon, Oremus, and Taylor.
A panel discussion with legislators that own small businesses will occur during the event.
Small businesses make up 99.4% of all businesses in South Carolina and 98.7% of the Aiken Chamber membership. Small business is defined by the Small Business Administration as a business with fewer than 500 employees.
Small businesses play a crucial role in the economy, often driving innovation, job creation, and economic growth. Small business owners also have firsthand experience with the challenges and opportunities of running a business in their respective states, and their insights can help inform policy decisions that affect the business environment.
Aiken’s small business owners are deeply invested in our community and have a unique perspective on the needs and priorities of business ownership. By listening to small business owners, state legislators can make more informed decisions that benefit the economy, communities, and overall well-being of their constituents.
“It is important for the South Carolina Legislature to remember that small business is the state’s heartbeat,” said Aiken Chamber Vice Chair of Public Affairs, Dustin Ennis, Edward Jones Investments. “Small Business Day at the State House will help us ensure that South Carolina’s small businesses are heard big!”
The Aiken Chamber delegation will be led by small business owner and 2024 Chair Charlie Hartz, Village Café and Scenthound. The delegation is sponsored by SRP Federal Credit Union. SRP offers business checking, lending and savings services to small businesses across the CSRA.

Shaw Industries expansion is topic at First Friday
You may have noticed something big going on near I-20 at Exit 22 over the last few years. That is the site of long-time Aiken manufacturer Shaw Industries doubling the facility’s square footage and increasing the size of its campus three-fold.
Shaw Industries Plant Manager John Riley is spearheading the monumental $500 million expansion project and will be the featured speaker at the April 5, First Friday Means Business.
This historic endeavor marks the largest capital investment in Shaw's history, promising transformative effects on Aiken County's economic landscape.
Attendees will have the opportunity to hear about the project's scope, its anticipated impact, and the opportunities it presents for the local economy. The expansion project not only signifies a significant financial investment but also holds the potential to catalyze growth, create jobs, and elevate Aiken County's standing within the region.
Riley's presentation is expected to shed light on how the expansion aligns with Shaw Industries' long-term vision, as well as how it reflects the company's commitment to innovation and sustainability.
In addition to being well informed about the impact of Shaw Industries, attendees will also receive valuable information and updates from Aiken County, the City of Aiken, the Aiken Chamber and from the April First Friday Means Business sponsor Children’s Place.
The monthly breakfast will occur Friday, April 5, at Newberry Hall from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Members should register on the Events & News page at www.aikenchamber.net. Attendees are encouraged to wear blue in honor of Child Abuse Prevention Month.
