Friends,

This Sunday in worship we'll have the rare opportunity to hear from a representative of the global church, as the Rev. Perline Cooper will be present to share news of the Church of Jesus Christ in Madagascar (FJKM). Perline comes to us as an International Peacemaker, with her travels funded by the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program. Each autumn, several dozen church leaders from other lands itinerate among Presbyterian churches, sharing fellowship and stories of what it means to be a Christian in their home countries.

Perline is unusual among this year's group of International Peacemakers in that she's been living in the United States (Albany, New York) for several years, helping care for her ailing mother-in-law and overseeing the ministries of several expatriate congregations of the FJKM in Canada and the United States.

Special thanks to Melinda Nye, who has made arrangements for Perline's visit and has been hosting her in her home, as she goes out to speak in other New Jersey churches.

Perline will make her presentation as an extended Minute for Mission, then will be available, following coffee hour, for a longer question-and-answer period. She has compelling stories to tell: you won't want to miss it.

As for my sermon, "Homeward Bound," I'll be preaching on James 5:13-20 , focusing on the importance of inviting others to church - especially those "wanderers" who may have been part of the fellowship at one time, but whom we've been missing. Sometimes a word of invitation from a friend is all it takes to restore them to an active role in the community. (Some may even have been waiting for such a caring contact, wondering if they're truly missed.)

Perline will tell us of a rapidly-growing denomination that's opening new congregations and has a shortage of trained pastors because there are so many people eager to hear the Word. At over 5 million members, the FJKM is several times larger in membership than our Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

Clearly, the Christians of Madagascar have no trouble inviting others to discover the joy of a vibrant relationship with Jesus Christ. We can probably learn a few things from them!

This should be a very special Sunday. Hope to see you here!

Pastor Carl

Is there a young person in your family, grade 7 or above, who's ready for Confirmation? Pastor Carl be offering a series of Confirmation classes beginning in early 2019, but we'd like to hear from parents and youth now about what meeting day time will work out best (we're thinking Sunday evenings, but are open to other suggestions).

As a way of getting a head start on the Confirmation process, we're offering an opportunity to attend the Confirmation Day Event at Camp Johnsonburg on Saturday, October 27 (cost: $20, which includes lunch). That will be a fun day of games, group-building, discussions and even some time for boating and the zip line!

If you'd like to find out more about Confirmation, parents and youth are invited to attend a brief meeting following worship next Sunday, October 3. Please call or email Regina in the church office to let us know you're able to attend that meeting.
