WPH is Hiring for a Volunteer Position!

Position Title: Hamilton Employer Connector – Volunteer Position


Location: Hamilton (Including: Dundas, Ancaster, Stoney Creek, Grimsby, Waterdown, Flamborough & Glanbrook).


Purpose:

The role of Hamilton Employer Connector is to make contact and educate Hamilton area employers about the work Workforce Planning Hamilton does and share insight of the

Employer One survey and support employers to complete the survey.


The Community Connector will successfully engage in person with employers to educate them about WPH and encourage participation with the Employer One Survey.


Position Summary:

The Hamilton Employer Connector is responsible for:



• Navigating the Hamilton community (ie specific areas of Hamilton will be delegated to Employer Connectors based on preference) by visiting local businesses in person and sharing information provided about the Employer One Survey and supporting employers to complete the survey


• Engaging and educating employers about the Employer One Survey needs and how we can support them to complete the survey


• Your own travel to and from the local office downtown Hamilton and to areas around Hamilton


• Keeping a log of the businesses you visited on documentation provided by WPH


• Attending in-person or virtual on-boarding to learn about the role and engage in the training to be prepared to enter the community with confidence


Benefits of the role:

• Experience engaging directly with employers and building community connections


• Experience volunteering in a well-respected small non-profit organization


• Full onboarding experience and training to familiarize you with Workforce Planning Hamilton, the work we do, and in-depth understanding of the Employer One Survey


• Travel expenses reimbursed followed company policies


Commitment:

• Ideally 4-8 hours per week however,

• Flexibility available to work around volunteer needs


• Volunteering preferred Monday through Friday during regular businesses hours of 9am-

5pm


• February 5th 2024 - March 5 2024 with availability to extend volunteer opportunities


• Availability to participate at Connect to Careers Job Fair on March 5 from 8am-4pm

December 2023 Monthly Snapshot

Coming to the end of 2023, the Bank of Canada held steady the target policy rate at 5.00%. In November, Canada saw a leveling in total CPI inflation at 3.1%, with both the trim (3.5%) and median CPIs (3.4%) remaining unchanged. Job demand in Ontario saw a slow-down in December, with the province experiencing a 5% decline in the number of job postings from employers, and an accompanying 2% decline in the number of employers looking to hire (Workforce Planning Ontario, Labour Market Insights Report).


In December, the Hamilton CMA saw an overall decline in employment, and an accompanying decline in job demand for the month. The number of employed persons in the region declined by 1,500 persons for December, with the unemployment rate ticking up to 5.6%. Youth in Hamilton in December were seeking employment as they went on winter break, with youth entering into part-time employment during the month. Less employers were looking to hire in the month of December, with a 5% decline in total job postings. Despite this, Retail Salespersons continue to dominate as the most in-demand, with service-related occupations still in demand.

What's in the News?

Hamilton film industry readies for a busier 2024 after weathering 2023 strikes


The local film industry brought in about $50 million in 2023, compared to a high of $72 million in 2022. Hamilton's film industry is on a roller-coaster ride and one studio owner says he's looking forward to finding steadier ground in 2024.

2024 Total Solar Eclipse in Hamilton Ontario


On April 8, 2024, Hamilton, Ontario will be within the boundaries of a total solar eclipse! The Hamilton Centre of the RASC will be holding a public event on the day of the eclipse.


The last total solar eclipse in Hamilton was on January 24, 1925, and it lasted approximately 1 minute and 45 seconds. The last eclipse visible in Hamilton was on October 14, 2023, where approximately 28% of the Sun was covered.
