My Favorite Thing of All
The Story behind the song!

I picked a song assignment idea out of jar at one of the Southwest Regional Folk Alliance (SWRFA) Conferences held in Austin every year. The prompt said, “My Favorite Things”. Of course, the first song that came to mind was the Mary Poppins song that states, “these are my favorite things”. I was at a loss about what to do next, so I started to make a list of all my favorite things. The more I wrote, the clearer it became that some “things” were more favorite than others. Most of them centered around the home Linda and I created for ourselves – surrounded by nature’s beauty. The was one slight variant on the list – my good friend, James Lee Stanley attended the event and hearing him play again sent my mind back to the days close to 50 years ago when we first met. He has been an inspiration to me and many independent songwriters. You can check out his site at https://jamesleestanley.com/. There is also a Wikipedia page covering his whole career: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Lee_Stanley.
But I digress – I chose to record this song with Chris Gage accompanying me on his beautiful piano. His performance helped me capture and realize just how deeply I feel about the things in my life. My list is rather long.
During his solo in the middle of the song there is a picture of an old steam driven passenger train coasting along a river with the fall colors in the background. That covers quite a few favorites: riding on a train, fall colors, the great outdoors especially where water is involved.
It’s too dry here in Texas for this Wisconsin boy!

What’s Happening at RpT’s Library
This is the time of the year when I sit back and review what’s been accomplished in 2023 and to start making plans for 2024. Some of the things I accomplished were - writing several new songs including co-writes with Roxi Copeland & Richard Egg, arranging/recording with my friend Roberto Ramos, producing sessions for Ema Jane Conley & Frank Exum, performing live again, losing weight, and last but most important, living/loving with Linda and all that is a part of creating a successful life together. I can’t wait to see what 2024 has in store for us.
Our good friend and fellow musician Frank Exum recorded his wife’s favorite classical piece and asked us to turn it into a birthday present for her. Here is the link to this fun piece. Linda used their pictures and photoshopped them adding some humorous comments. Let us know what your think! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hf1fnDye6M8
