Orientation Week: Making Connections and
Building Community

SSW Summer Scene
From July 11-18, GSG President Shirley Guenfoud and eight other SBU students participated in Stony Brook’s Study Abroad program, Environmental Justice and Community Resilience in Puerto Rico, alongside Associate Professors Anna Hayward and Amy Hammock, and Program Associate Alejandro Silva Diaz.
Throughout the week, students traveled across Puerto Rico learning from community leaders on social justice through the arts, agriculture, and sustainability. The experience also included hands-on community service, such as assisting with the restoration of the Yokahu Tower in El Yunque Rainforest through paint removal and site preservation work.
We are proud to see both our graduate and undergraduate students engaging in meaningful learning experiences this Summer.

Prof. Cluesman Presents
at AIDS 2026
SSW faculty member Sabrina Cluesman, PhD, MSW, LCSW, presented at AIDS 2026, the 26th International AIDS Conference hosted by the International AIDS Society (IAS) in Rio de Janeiro last month.
Dr. Cluesman's presentation focused on findings from Manas por Manas, a randomized controlled trial of a peer-led HIV prevention intervention with transgender women and travestis in São Paulo. The study examined changes in stigma and resilience-related processes over the first year of the trial.
"It was an honor to present this work internationally, and I’m excited to bring these collaborations, questions, and methodological approaches to Stony Brook this fall," said Dr. Cluesman.

Red Watch Band Training
Monday, August 31, 12:30 to 2:30 pm, Health Sciences, Level 3, LH 6
In recognition of Overdose Awareness Month, the Graduate Student Government (GSG) is partnering with the Center for Prevention and Outreach (CPO) to offer a Red Watch Band Narcan & Overdose Prevention Training. This interactive training will empower students to recognize the signs and symptoms of alcohol and drug overdoses, understand how alcohol affects the body during an overdose, and respond confidently in an emergency. Participants will also explore the history of the opioid epidemic, current trends and challenges surrounding substance use, and the critical role of overdose prevention in protecting our communities.
Participants will be trained in naloxone (Narcan) use, earn their Red Watch Band certification, and leave with a free Narcan kit. By the end of the training, students will have the knowledge and confidence to recognize an overdose, respond appropriately, and potentially save a life.

ISP Policy Scholars is a national program for students who want to do more than study policy. You'll practice it under the guidance of a policy mentor. Over one cycle, you'll build skills across six core competencies and finish by being formally installed as an ISP Policy Scholar.
