SEPTEMBER 23RD, 2020
“And all at once, summer collapsed into fall.”

-Oscar Wilde
Welcome back, Autumn!
Did you know that trees turn colors because they stop producing chlorophyll which causes the green to fade and the colorful season to commence? Yeah me neither, thank you Google. Let's ponder how responses to change differ. Here's a tree, slowing down the work load and getting ready for it's winter sleep. While a cute cuddly bear is ramping up production and eating everything [my dream diet] to prepare for the Wisconsin winters. And don't forget those spunky squirrels left to stock pile supplies so they have longevity through the lean winter months. If you were to offer a moment of reflection, you may sense the gravity of this season. It's so much more than pumpkin carving and raking leaves: it's about preparation.

Being prepared typically requires an understanding of what's to come. Mother Nature has a pre-determined pattern to seasons of change. However, as a community and as a country, we are left to manage much more than leaves changing or a fresh blanket of snow. My apologies about the S word...

In the midst of COVID season, we are left to navigate change that carries unknown variables and timetables. We are asked to be patient as questions loom overhead. We battle a barrage of divisive topics and commentary daily all linked to the construct of change. Anyone else feeling a little envious of the trees right now? Me too. But here is where our paths realign with the timber world. Trees survive the rigorous changing of seasons because they have deep roots that provide stability and nourishment when the outer climate is harsh. We have roots too. Ground yourself with the reminder of people and habits that keep you strong. Lean into them as the seasons shift and you experience new environments.

One way the chamber is leaning into experience is by inviting you and other business leaders into a conversation about change. September 24th @ Noon, marks the kick-off of a 4 week session that will replace our Multi-Chamber Network Scramble and drive conversations related to conquering change.
Information learned is one more way to be prepared and deepen your roots. The reality of change is that it forces cessation, exploration and growth. It forces you to streamline process and structure. It forces you to attract and build up teams. It forces you think outside the box. Change invites a choice: be a tree and slow down for a period of reflection, be the bear and leverage consumer driven-business while it's in front of you or be the squirrel and stock pile the commodity of knowledge. The choice is yours*.

*Animals and plant life NOT mentioned in this entry also pose viable options for who you are and the choices you will make. Do not be compelled to prevail as a tree, bear or squirrel. Other options do exist and we encourage you to define what that may be.

Keep smiling, keep sanitizing, and stay safe!
