Is school supposed to be this much fun? YES when you're learning outdoors about the real world!
Teachers, there's only one fall Tahoe Science Camp still open for a class of 25-30 fourth or fifth graders Tuesday-Friday, October 20-23, so HURRY! Your students will make new friends with fourth graders from Excel Christian Academy and do our standards-based life science and earth science activities. We'll hike at Spooner Lake and visit the Tahoe Environmental Research Center. See more about overnight programs on our website here,and

September Day Field Trips
Best way to start your school year immersed in natural science! Most of our fall day field studies are just outside of Reno in the forest at Galena Creek September 21-25. Activities support curriculum standards in science and other subjects as students hike and do aquatic, life science, and earth science explorations.

Fall Adventure Day Camp
Summer Adventure Day Camp was a blast, and we figured out how to beat the heat with our splash pad and studies in the Truckee River between activities on aviation, art, pollinators, survival, and more.

Parents & Grandparents, make sure the kids have a chance to be active and make new friends and keep on learning during fall break October 5-9. The River School Farm near Mayberry Park is the perfect setting for your six to twelve-year-olds to explore nature along the trails and be inspired about STEM topics by guest presenters and activities.

Nevada’s PreK-12 educators are invited to a special in-person back-to-school night from 4:00-6:00 pm August 26 at the Nevada Museum of Art. Enjoy access to the Museum’s exhibitions, a DJ, small bites and a bar. Participate in hands-on activities and a raffle.

Science Corner: Beavers in the News
From a USA Today article by Doyle Rice: "Forget groundhogs and their weather predictions. Now, fellow critters ‒ beavers ‒ are actually doing their part to combat climate change, one dam at a time, a new study says.
The new research, published on March 18 in the journal Communications Earth & Environment, has, for the first time, calculated the carbon dioxide emitted and sequestered due to engineering work by beavers in suitable wetland areas.
“Our findings show that beavers don’t just change landscapes: they fundamentally shift how carbon dioxide moves through them," said study lead author Joshua Larsen, of the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom, in a statement.
By slowing water, trapping sediments, and expanding wetlands, the beavers turn streams into powerful carbon "sinks," which are a key part of the planet's carbon cycle. Carbon dioxide is the greenhouse gas most responsible for human-caused global warming."

We Love the Lorax
and his message of sustainability. We teamed up with the folks at Flow Designs who hosted a Lorax family movie night on their lovely patio. As Kristen from Flows said, "Sustainability has always been part of how we built Flow’s Boutique Venue — reusable over disposable, thoughtful over wasteful, every event.

The Lorax says it best: nothing changes until someone cares enough to do something about it. That’s why we wanted this night to be about more than a movie — it’s about getting kids outside and reminding our community that small, thoughtful choices add up.” Our Executive Director Emily led a rousing game of Sustainability Jeopardy and a recycle relay race for the kids before the movie.

Special Thanks This Month to Our Day Camp Presenters and Other Volunteers
Community members shared many hours of expertise as guest presenters to our campers this summer. We'd like to recognize Desert Research Institute, Flyer Visions, Nevada Department of Outdoor Recreation, Nevada Soaring Association, Soulful Seeds, Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, and others who shared activities on aviation, nature, survival, and art. They included Lauren Cox, Stew Crane, Kimberly Esse, Alejandra Garcia, Vivian Olds, Robert Oliver, Jim Pierce, Jasmina Sekanovich, Joe Sorenson, Tim Torell, and Sheldrick.
Ella Abbatangelo & Laura Dillman donated many hours giving our naturalist educators a hand with the children.
