20th Sunday of Ordinary Time (A) | Aug 16, 2020
Welcome Students!
Catholic Campus Ministry extends a warm welcome to all students as we begin a new academic year at WCU. It's great to see so many faces on campus (even if we can only see them from the nose up)! The circumstances we begin this semester under are new to all of us, but God is the same, now and forever, and he continues to reach out to us in each of our particular circumstances.

The gospel for this Sunday is an unusual one -- Jesus calls a Canaanite woman a dog! -- but, as I explain in this week's reflection, it illustrates for us the need to make the universal truths of the Catholic faith particular in our own lives; something I challenge all students to do during their time on campus, and something which Catholic Campus Ministry is here to help with.

Please look over this week's schedule below. It includes our first "Mass on the Grass" this Sunday and first "CCM Connect!" live stream on Wednesday night. Our small group Bible studies will begin the second week of the semester.

If you have not done so already, please be sure to follow us on all our social media (we are on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Twitter) to receive the latest updates. And I invite all students, new and returning, to drop by CCM to say hello and to spend some time in the chapel in prayer. Please be sure you review and abide by our COVID-19 protocols. You may schedule a meeting with me (in person or online) at this link.

In Christ's Peace,
Deacon Matt
SUNDAY | Aug 16
  • ROSARY | 3:30 PM
  • MASS | 4:00 PM

Sunday Masses this semester will be celebrated at Hillside Grind on the lawn (or inside if raining). Social distancing and face coverings will be required. Mass will also be live streamed on our Facebook Page.

COMING UP: Our Credo discussions after Mass will begin next week!
Here's a tip!

Since we aren't having hymnals or missals in the pews this semester, download the iMissal app to your phone to follow along with the readings and prayers for Mass.
TUESDAY | Aug 18
  • ADORATION | 12-1 PM

This semester we are volunteering every other Tuesday at The Community Table in downtown Sylva to help unload and process their bi-weekly bulk food deliveries from the MANNA Food Bank. Please contact us at ccm@wcucatholic.org if you would like to help, as we are very limited in the number of students who can participate at one time. Face masks will be required for all volunteers.

We also have an hour of silent Adoration in the chapel each Tuesday from 12-1 pm. Come for the whole hour or pop in for a few minutes during your lunch break to say hi to Jesus. Seating limited to 12 people. Face masks required in the chapel.
  • CCM CONNECT! | 7:00 PM

Join us for our first ever CCM Connect! live stream on our Facebook Page. Viewers are invited to join in the discussion in the comments as you watch. This week's topic is CCM Declassified College Survival Guide! Everything you need to know about how to say saintly and sane at WCU.

Tune in after for a time of prayer and praise, also live streamed on Facebook.
  • ADORATION | 12-1 PM

Silent Adoration in the chapel each Thursday from 12-1 pm. Seating limited to 12 people. Face masks required.
FRIDAY | Aug 21
  • MASS | 12:15 PM
  • CCM CLEAN UP | 1:00 PM
  • ROSARY for CAMPUS | 3:00 PM

We will have weekday Mass in the chapel each Friday at 12:15 pm (seating limited to 12 people, face masks required). After Mass, grab a to-go lunch on campus and bring it back to CCM to enjoy. We'll spend the afternoon doing light yard work and cleaning indoors to help keep our center beautiful. At 3:00 pm we will stop our work and pray the rosary together for our ministry and for all the students, staff and faculty at WCU.
Coming Next Week!
With large gatherings prohibited on campus, this semester we are encouraging students more than ever to participate in a small group Bible study. These groups are...

  • Student led
  • Scripture focused
  • Open to any student
  • Offered in person (limit 8 people per group) and online

We have a number of different small groups meeting on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays this semester. Check next week's newsletter for specific times and locations, or email us to be connected with a small group leader.
