Girls Soccer remains undefeated in Bay League!

On Wednesday, Mira Costa defeated Redondo Union 3-2! The game had been postponed a day due to the rain, but it was pouring throughout the game. Costa came out strong, scoring 3 goals in the first half, but Redondo came back in the 2nd to make it a close game. This puts Costa in first place for the first half of Bay League with an impressive 5-0 record.
Last week the season started off with 4 games. The Varsity team played Peninsula, Leuzinger, Palos Verdes and Centennial. They ended the week with an impressive 4-0 start in Bay League.
The JV and Frosh Soph teams played Peninsula, with 2 wins, Palos Verdes a tie (JV) and a loss (F/S) and ended the week with a clean sweep against North. Go Costa!

Summer School and Flex Registration Opens Next Week

Seniors and Juniors may register beginning on Tuesday, January 22, 9am for MBX Summer School. Sophomores and Freshman may register beginning on Thursday, January 24, 9am. Register for the grade your student will be entering in the fall.
 
2019 Summer School dates are:

Session 1: Monday, June 17 - Tuesday, July 2
(note classes meet Mon. – Fri. the first 2 weeks)
Session 2: Monday, July 8 - Thursday, July 25 (Mon. – Thurs.)

Academic courses meet from 8 am to 1:30 pm.

MBX Flex courses are available to students needing a more flexible summer school schedule. Please check our website for more information and available courses by clicking here . Classes can begin as early as June 17 and must be completed by August 9.


Boys soccer starts off 5-0 in Bay League!

Mira Costa Boys Soccer beat Redondo 3-0 on Tuesday at Mira Costa, putting them in first place in the Bay League at the halfway point with a record of 5-0-0 (W-L-T) and 13-0-3 overall. Redondo now has a league record of 4-1-0.
Josh Gaudiano scored in the first half and again in the second half. Dillan Argue scored the last goal with 10 minutes left to seal the win. Read More

Come support Boys Basketball play Peninsula at MBMS this Friday!
With a 14-8 overall record for the season, they are 3-2 in the Bay League. The team has two more home Bay League games at MBMS:
Friday, 1/18 vs Peninsula with an 8pm tip-off.
Tuesday, 1/29 vs Centennial with a 7:30pm tip-off, and it’s Senior Recognition Night.
Wear your green and gold, we’ll have fun giveaways at each game, VOX DJ’s and the amazing dance and cheer teams!
Girls Basketball wins So Cal Holiday Prep Classic!

The Mira Costa Girls Basketball team travelled to San Diego to participate in the So Cal Holiday Prep Classic. The team had a great tournament, winning the Championship in the NAIA division! Senior, Nicole Matsumoto was MVP of the tournament! Congratulations to Nicole and all the Lady Mustangs!
The team has been working hard at practice and it shows with some of their latest wins!
  The Lady Mustangs have been on a 8 game winning streak and are now 3-2 in the Bay League and 14-7 overall this season. On January 29, 2019, they will celebrating their Seniors, so please come out to cheer them on at MBMS!
Mira Costa Girl Ruggers Open Season 3-0!
The 2019 edition of the Mira Costa Lady Ruggers opened the season by sweeping at View Park. Traveling with only 8 players and on occasion playing with only 5, the girls showed ferocious tackling, great speed and tremendous heart en route to 3 consecutive wins. Read More
Costa Ruggers Take On State Power Cathedral Catholic

The Mira Costa Rugby Team played host to perennial athletic power Cathedral Catholic from Del Mar Heights (San Diego). The Dons just came off winning the California State Football Championship and were playing in their first match of the year. To say that the Mustangs were at a size disadvantage would be quite an understatement. Case in point, the Costa front row weigh a combined 595 lbs. compared to the Don’s 980 lbs. Read More *

Congratulations to former Mira Costa Captain Harrison Dulgarian ‘17. Dulgarian was named #2 division 1AA Scrum-Half in the Nation! Harrison has been the starting Scrum-Half at the University of Alabama the past two years.  Read More
Marching Band on parade
at Disneyland!
The Mira Costa Marching Band and Colorguard have been invited to perform in a parade at Disneyland this Saturday, January 19th. Costa’s fine musicians will be able to show their talent and precision, then enjoy the park for the entire day.
Girls Water Polo is undefeated in Bay League!

Girls Water Polo has played quite a few games since the break. Varsity remains undefeated in the Bay League, 5-1 against D3 teams, and 7-6 overall. Junior Varsity has built an 8-4-1 record and FS is 4-2.
In the most recent games against Redondo Union, all three teams came out victorious. The varsity game was marked by strong offense on both sides, but an even stronger defense by the Mustangs with goalie Erin ODonnell racking up an impressive 13 blocks . Read More

AIDS Benefit
Mira Costa Drama/Tech’s annual AIDS Benefit Show is Tuesday, February 5th, at 7 pm in the MCHS Small Theatre. Tickets are $5 at the door. All proceeds go to Broadway Cares Equity Fights AIDS. Please join the talented students of Mira Costa for a night of wonderful performances benefitting this worthy cause. Hope to see you there!
ComedySportz news
On Friday, Jan. 11th, Mira Costa’s ComedySportz team competed in an away game at Redondo Union High School. At the end of a close comedic match, the final score was Mira Costa 25, Redondo Union 29. A fun time was had by all!
Costa Wrestling competes at The Tournament of Champions!
The Varsity Boys were at the Tournament of Champions on Friday and Saturday, January 4-5, held at Cerritos College. The Tournament of Champions is their biggest tournament with 68 teams, some from Texas and Nevada. Congratulations to Andrew Chaney who took 5th Place at 138 lbs. This is the first time in over 40 years that Costa had a Sophomore place this high. Read More
Choir Updates!
2nd Annual Choir Mattress Fundraiser
On Saturday, November 10th, the Mira Costa Choir Department hosted its 2nd annual choir mattress fundraiser. Selling brand new, brand name mattresses at savings of up to 50% off retail, the event drew South Bay residents and members of other local communities to the Costa cafeteria-turned-mobile showroom. Thank you to all the students who helped get the word out about the fundraiser, and to all the parents, families, and friends who purchased mattresses. Looking forward to next year’s event!

Boys Lacrosse aims for Bay League title!

The 2018 Mira Costa Boys Lacrosse Alumni Game featured some of the past alumni taking on the current Mira Costa players and coaches. It was great to see the alumni back out there!
On December 8th, the Mira Costa boys Lacrosse Team went 4-0 and finished 1st in the High School Division at the War on the Shore Lacrosse Tournament.
Costa Softball hosts successful alumni lunch!
The Mustang softball team held an alumni lunch and “Secret Santa” gift exchange on the last day of school before winter break. The team was thrilled to welcome back eight recent grads from the last few years,
Two Costa football players selected to All Star Football Game on January 19th!


Congratulations to two Mustang Football players, Nick Carpino (quarterback) and Koda Thormodsgaard (running back, linebacker) who were chosen to participate in the 2019 West Torrance Lions All Star Football Game. Come cheer them on!

Badminton starts practicing for season!
High School badminton tryouts were successfully conducted last week with overwhelming number of participants. The names of both Varsity and Junior Varsity teams were announced Monday, January 14th. Badminton team practices will start this week. Read More

Rotary Preliminary Solo Competition! The Rotary Preliminary Solo competition was held on Friday, January 11th. The finals round will be held on February 1st in the Small Theater.The event is free and everyone is welcome to attend and support our talented musicians.

Mira Costa Athletic Complex Update
Abatement activities completed over the Winter Break, and demolition is about 50% complete. Fun fact: the demo and hauling process includes sorting the debris and sending various products to different places for recycle - i.e. steel is sent to steel recycle. Work is right on schedule and continues through the rain. Demolition is scheduled to be completed by February, with a ground breaking ceremony scheduled for Friday, February 15. Gym sports, girls and boys basketball are playing and practicing in other local facilities, largely at MBMS. For games and locations for boys basketball click here . Thank you to MBUSD for refinishing the MBMS Gym floor over the break - our players are enjoying a squeaky surface certainly adding up to more points for Costa!
