Dear Friends, As we welcome the beginning of a new year, we invite you to join us in celebrating the significant achievements of 2019 and Youth America Grand Prix’s remarkable 20 th   Anniversary Season. As the largest global network of dance, YAGP has brought scholarship auditions, workshops, and performance opportunities to over 100,000 dance students to date and over 12,000 in 2019 alone. Our alumni are currently dancing in every major ballet company around the world, with several of them emerging in recent years as talented choreographers, bringing fresh, exciting perspectives for the art form.  We owe tremendous thanks to all who have supported YAGP's educational initiatives over the past twenty years. Because of you - the participants, parents, teachers, friends, partners, and audiences - thousands of dancers' lives have been changed. Our 20th Anniversary “Stars of Today Meet the Stars of Tomorrow" Gala at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center featured YAGP Alumni*, whose careers have flourished in renowned dance companies around the world, and thrilling performances from international stars Isabella Boylston*, Herman Cornejo, Kimin Kim*, Ekaterina Kondaurova, Lucia Lacarra, Hee Seo*, Olga Smirnova, and more. A tribute to the late Arthur Mitchell with an introduction by the legendary Cicely Tyson and two world premieres from emerging choreographers -- Juliano Nunes' new duet to the music of Karen LeFrak and YAGP Alumna & former ABT dancer Melanie Hamrick's choreographic premiere to a special musical arrangement by Mick Jagger -- were among the many highlights of the evening. YAGP PRESENTS: INTERNATIONAL DANCE SCHOOL FESTIVAL

As part of YAGP's 20th Anniversary Gala celebration at Lincoln Center, we were thrilled to present the 1st annual International Dance School Festival (IDSF). This unprecedented performance, which received its world premiere in New York City, featured talented students from YAGP's partner schools and companies in one unforgettable dance evening. The program featured beloved classical works as well as cutting-edge choreography by Jean-Christophe Maillot, Marco Goecke, David Dawson, Uwe Scholz, Carlos Valcárcel, Stanton Welch, and other leading choreographers in the dance world today.

YAGP 20 th ANNIVERSARY SEASON

YAGP's 2019 Season, which saw over 12,000 dance students from across the United States and 10 international locations, culminated in our 20th Anniversary Season Finals. Over 1,400 of the world's most promising dance students, representing over 350 schools in 41 countries, gathered in New York to perform and participate in master classes, workshops, educational seminars, and scholarship auditions. Hundreds of scholarships and acceptances were offered to the world's leading schools, companies, and institutions.

YAGP ALUMNI AWARDS & HONORS

Dance Magazine Awards YAGP Alumna and NYCB Principal Dancer Sara Mearns was named a 2019 Dance Magazine Award Honoree . A tradition dating back to 1954, the Dance Magazine Awards celebrate living legends who have made a lasting impact in the world of dance. Larissa Saveliev, YAGP Founder and Artistic Director, was an Honoree in 2014. We congratulate Sara with this well-deserved honor.

Benois de la Danse Vadim Muntagirov,  YAGP Alumnus and Principal Dancer at The Royal Ballet, received the Best Male Dancer Award at the 27 th  Prix Benois de la Danse, otherwise known as the "Oscars" of dance, held in May at The Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, Russia. YAGP close friends and frequent Gala performers Ashley Bouder (Principal Dancer, NYCB) and Elisa Carrilo Cabrera (Principal Dancer, Staatsballett Berlin ) also received awards for Best Female Dancer. The Bessies - NY Dance & Performance Awards

Taylor Stanley , YAGP Alumnus & NYCB Principal Dancer, received a 2019 Bessie Award for his outstanding performance in The Runaway by Kyle Abraham at the David H. Koch Theater. The Bessies, produced in partnership with Dance/NYC, have honored exceptional and groundbreaking work of artists in NYC for the past 35 years.

Dance Magazine's “25 to Watch” Once again, several YAGP Alumni were among those selected as Dance Magazine 's "25 to Watch" in 2020. Congratulations to our alumni Zimmi Coker (ABT), Abdiel Figueroa Reyes (Hubbard Street Dance Chicago), and Tommie Kesten (Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre). See the full list here .

YAGP Alumna  Juliet Doherty  starred in the feature film  High Strung Free Dance , which opened in movie theaters nationwide in October. Read about her experience making the film here . Xander Parish Receives the Title of OBE YAGP board members and guests gathered to celebrate Mariinsky Ballet Principal Dancer Xander Parish receiving the title of Officer of the Order of the British Empire, one of the very few dancers to receive this honor, at the chic Tribeca loft of designer Laura Lobdell. Designer Tutu Project

YAGP Board Member Marcella Guarino Hymowitz, in partnership with Net A Porter, hosted an intimate dinner for YAGP friends and supporters to celebrate YAGP's new art project of custom-designed tutus from Monse’s Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, Carolina Herrera’s Wes Gordon, and The Row’s Ashley Olsen and Mary-Kate Olsen. The tutus were then auctioned off at the YAGP 20th Anniversary Gala, honoring Marcella for her outstanding work on behalf of YAGP, with proceeds benefiting YAGP's mission of dance education. For the past seven years, YAGP Alumni have been featured in the stunning Gala de Danza in Los Cabos, Mexico. Produced by YAGP Board Member Christina Lyon, the Gala features cutting-edge technology and a breathtaking fusion of visual and performance arts on a custom-built stage at the ultra-modern Vicery Los Cabos hotel. The star-studded cast for the 2019 Gala de Danza Los Cabos included YAGP Alumni Hee Seo (Principal Dancer, ABT), Melissa Hamilton (First Soloist, Royal Ballet), Julian MacKay (First Soloist, Mikhailovsky Ballet), and Avery Gay ( Semi-Finalist on World of Dance in 2018).

The Festival de Danza was presented in conjunction with the YAGP Semi-Final in Orizaba, Mexico, where YAGP was presented with a seal of the town as an official welcome by Mayor Igor Fidel Roji Lopez. The 12th annual "Gala of the Stars" at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa, California featured talented young protégés, selected by visiting artistic directors of the Southland Ballet Academy International Summer Intensive and YAGP, alongside an incredible roster of dancers from San Francisco Ballet, National Ballet of Canada, the Mikhailovsky Theatre, and other internationally-acclaimed companies.

YAGP 2020 INTERNATIONAL SEMI-FINALS

This fall, YAGP completed its 2020 Season International Semi-Finals and conducted educational workshops in Korea, Brazil, Australia, Indonesia, China, Japan, Mexico, France, Kyrgyzstan, Italy, and Spain -- our most extensive international season yet, with a diverse array of incredible talent from all corners of the globe. Qualifying dancers received scholarships to renowned dance schools around the world and invitations to attend the YAGP 2020 NY Finals. We look forward to continuing our North America Semi-Finals this winter.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Jolie Rose Lombardo's Inspiring Story

After being diagnosed with a spinal tumor in early 2019 and being told she might never walk – or dance – again, Jolie Rose Lombardo refused to give up and worked hard to regain her strength, even as the treatment and therapy proved costly for her family. Her unwavering dedication, resiliency, and bravery led her to a recovery that was nothing short of a miracle, giving her the opportunity to continue her professional training at the John Cranko School at the Stuttgart Ballet on the scholarship she received at YAGP. Here is her inspiring story , as it appeared in Pointe . Hearing about her incredible journey, Allyson Tang was so moved that she generously awarded Jolie Rose a scholarship on behalf of the   Angel Shine Foundation, in loving memory of her late husband, Dr. Thomas Widmann. In a letter of gratitude to YAGP, Jolie says, “when I received your scholarship, I couldn't believe that you would do something so wholeheartedly and kind for someone you have never met…You will never know exactly how much this means to me, and I am so grateful!"

Dreams Come True for Haitian Dancers The journey to YAGP can be difficult and YAGP is ever grateful to the individuals and partners who helped support YAGP's efforts to make a difference in young dancers' lives, who showed resilience in the face of adversity, like the students from the Institut de Danse Lynn Williams Rouzier in Haiti. After a year of devastating losses, including suffering through a hurricane and losing their school in a fire, an ensemble from the school was able to attend the 2019 NY Finals, perform onstage, and take master classes with renowned judges — all thanks to a generous donation from one of our supporters who chose to remain anonymous.

YAGP EDUCATION

Ask the Expert In 2019, YAGP continued to present ASK THE EXPERT - its much-anticipated educational interview series, hosted by Emmy-winning TV journalist, Sergey Gordeev. Relevant and informative discussions with the top professionals in the field included such important topics as dance education and performance opportunities, professional growth as an artist and as an individual, nutrition, health, physical and emotional well-being, and many other subjects of interest to dancers worldwide.
