Beginning 2021 with Gratitude
Moving through an uncertain 2020 to a new year of promise!
|
Gang Alternative, Inc. (GA) is a faith-based, community organization established in 2005 to empower youth and families to live healthier, more productive lives. GA supports community members to be the best that they can be by offering a holistic approach to academic, physical, social, economic and spiritual development. We feel gratified coming through 2020 in the middle of a pandemic while continuing to provide our services with an emphasis on safety.
Now with 25 programs, GA serves Miami-Dade and Broward Counties and operates under five service pillars: Positive Youth Development, Family Strengthening, Health and Wellness, Community Upliftment and Partnerships and Workforce Development. We have expanded our programming 47% in the last year and continue to move forward to continuing our mission in 2021.

PILLAR OF SERVICE SPOTLIGHT - Positive Youth Development
|
Programs under our Positive Youth Development Pillar of Service engage young people in their homes, schools, and communities by offering services and activities aligned with the Jesus Model: that of serving, helping, respecting, uplifting, and inspiring. Our programs and community sites provide a safe space for children and youth to learn, grow, and fellowship without fear of judgement, discrimination or harassment.
Programs under our Positive Youth Development Pillar of Service focus are:
· Afterschool care (K-5, middle and high schoolers)
· Academic enrichment
· Career advisement and planning
· In-school life skills development
· In-school and community-based substance abuse prevention and intervention
· Trauma-focused cognitive behavior treatment
· Violence prevention
· Gang activity suppression
· Healthy relationships
· Group and one-on-one mentoring

On December 17 & 18 the children from GA's GPS program had their Christmas party with games, food and prizes. They had hot chocolate and cookies and performed for each other on Zoom from our different locations. Over 200 hundred children received gifts. Thank you to Toys for Tots, Miracle Mike and many, many individual donors.

On November 21, GA blessed 1,200 South Florida families with turkeys in Homestead, Ft. Lauderdale (Sistrunk) and Little Haiti. A HUGE thank you to all of our sponsors and volunteers. @wefloridafinancial @JacksonHealth @CBTCollege @velvie @tatiana.teo.photography @itcanonlybejared, Abundant Life Christian Church Margate

GA's Project HERO is a training and job placement program for homeless veterans. Last month, we held a pizza night to show appreciation and lift the spirits of our participants. Thirty-three pizzas were donated from some of the best spots in Broward County. Vets and their families were given four pizzas per household.
They also received a bag of hygiene supplies that ranged from body wash to toothpaste. Many thanks to Harvest Drive, GG’s of New York Downtown Grill & Pizza Kitchen & Primanti Brothers Pizza!

CONGRATULATIONS ROSE JEANMARY
|
Gang Alternative, Inc. would like to celebrate the success of Rose Jeanmary, who was recently selected as the Miami-Dade County Public Schools District Nominee for the 2020-2021 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program for Career and Technical Education. The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by executive order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors.
Rose is currently attending Miami Edison Sr. High School and has been an active participant in the GA's Minority Violence Prevention Project (MVP 88) since 2018. At 15, she migrated from Haiti to South Florida, where she now lives with her eldest sister, brother-in-law and their children, and younger brother. Rose is also a member of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and has earned several Honor Roll awards.

GA has continued our programming with covid-19 still firmly in our lives. Our services have not been interrupted and we continue to follow guidelines established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which includes wearing cloth face coverings as a measure to contain the wearer’s respiratory droplets and help protect others. We take the safety of our staff and all we serve seriously and will continue to be diligent in protecting against covid.
